The season of giving is upon us.
I love Christmas time, the snow, the movies, the emotions. I thoroughly enjoy every moment of it.
However, there is nothing I enjoy more than watching those around me experience joy during this time of year. There are so many kind and generous people out there who deserve the world but cannot have it. The simplest actions can make such a large impact on someone's day.
Something as small as a smile or wave can make a world of difference.
We, as a society, often forget that life revolves around so much more than material things.
It is not the shoes, clothes, or physical appearance that matters. What is on the inside is what truly counts, people are so much more than a just a two-dimensional composite sketch of their true selves.
So, as the most wonderful time of the year rapidly approaches. I ask that you keep your mind and heart focused on more than material gifts.
An open heart can provide so much more for a person than a designer handbag or expensive shoes.
Poverty is a huge problem that many countries are facing and I feel as a young adult that I need to use my voice for something more than just trivial, unimportant topics.
Providing a service to others and using our voices to spread awareness allows the adults and peers in our lives that we have genuine concerns. It shows we care about something outside of ourselves but somewhat within our control.
Giving back isn't hard.
Giving back isn't "lame".
Giving back isn't "dumb" or a "waste of time".
Giving back IS however, extremely important.
I'm not asking for you to donate thousands or even hundreds of dollars to charity, but I am asking that you take the time to give someone a smile or hold the door open.
People are distant nowadays and everyone seems to be an enigma, keep that in mind. We don't know one another, we don't know the struggles and pain someone could be experiencing.
That is why it is so necessary to simply be kind and give back this holiday season. You will never know or understand how much of a difference you could make.
