Kim Kardashian is pretty much the epitome of “famous for being famous,” but since her stardom randomly arose, she has certainly made a name for herself in multiple industries. Kardashian clearly likes to stand out, and it is evident that having two children has not hindered that desire. On Monday, Mar. 7th, the infamous Kim K posted a picture of herself naked with two black rectangles concealing her "lady parts" on Twitter captioned, “When you’re like I have nothing to wear LOL” in true, nonchalant, Kim-fashion.
As would be expected, this picture stirred up a lot of controversy with fans and fellow celebrities alike. Many celebs came out and tweeted making jokes about the picture and even shaming Kardashian for revealing so much of herself even after getting married and having kids.
After seeing the picture, actress Chloe Moretz tweeted, "I truly hope you realize how important setting goals are for young women, teaching them we have so much more to offer than just our bodies" and later deleted the message after backlash from Kardashian and others. Rumors had spread that perhaps Kim’s husband, Kanye West, or sister, Khloe Kardashian had hacked her account and posted the picture instead of Kim, but Kim denied these claims in a tweet, saying, “Wait I can't believe people thought Kanye or Khloe hacked my Twitter. I swear I'm funny too!!!”
Of course, in true Kardashian fashion, Kim embraced the attention and made jokes about the situation. She even managed to deliver a message to the public about the controversy in an essay on her website. According to an article by Perez Hilton, in this essay, Kim said, “It always seems to come back around to my sex tape. Yes, a sex tape that was made 13 years ago. 13 YEARS AGO. Literally that lonnng ago. And people still want to talk about it?!?!” She continued, later saying, “I am empowered by my body. I am empowered by my sexuality. I am empowered by feeling comfortable in my skin. I am empowered by showing the world my flaws and not being afraid of what anyone is going to say about me. And I hope that through this platform I have been given, I can encourage the same empowerment for girls and women all over the world.”
Yes, Kim may be a mother, but she is also a human being and therefore should not be told she must restrict or restrain herself simply because she is a mother. Certain critics of Kim think female empowerment is telling women they are beautiful no matter what and do not have to show off their bodies for attention, but to tell Kim that she cannot show off her body, even if she just wants to, is not female empowerment either. Sure, maybe posting a pretty much naked pic for the whole world to see isn't everyone's cup of tea, but being proud of who you are and not being afraid to show the world is not something to criticize, but something to embrace and commend.
