Earlier this month, Kim Kardashian posted this picture on Twitter with the caption "When you're like I have nothing to wear LOL."
The world exploded. Multiple celebrities used their personal Twitter platforms to come and give their input on the photo, and what it means to be a feminist. Responses from Chloe Grace Moretz, Bette Midler and Piers Morgan got a lot of attention. Kim replied to all of them and then, in typical Kim fashion, posted another picture of herself with the caption "#liberated."
Now, Chloe Grace Moretz and the other celebrities mentioned made some good points -- about why women need to be noticed for their intelligence and need to be treated as equals by men in a way that doesn't depend solely on looks. In any other circumstance, such a response would be praised, because it’s true -- women are often over-sexualized and degraded by both their male counterparts and fellow females. However, these celebrities (each of them with their own Twitter following of millions) made their comments in response to Kim’s picture. They criticized her for being empowered by her sexuality, and told her that in order to be a good role model for her children and her future generation, she should cover up.
Bottom line, that’s the real issue. Women can feel empowered by showing a lot of skin, or no skin at all. Neither choice makes you less of a woman. If you’d rather flaunt your intelligence over your body -- or both -- it’s based on your personal opinion as a woman and what you feel comfortable with.
Kim posted her own response on her website.
Welcome to the 21st century: it’s time to embrace women for who they are as full, complete, influential people. It's time for Chloe Grace Moretz and the rest of Twitter to mind their own business.
