Today, people complain about the quality of Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network and how they were “so much better” in the '90s and early 2000s. Although that’s a hard opinion to argue, that doesn’t mean that all shows that come on those channels today are terrible. I feel as if a lot of them aren’t even given a fair chance. Some of today’s shows that were written for children are surprisingly good, like the following five:
1. "Steven Universe"
"Steven Universe" is a coming of age story about a young boy who just so happens to be half human, half crystal gem. He lives with his three aunts who are also crystal gems. The job of the crystal gems is to protect the universe with the powers that the gems give them. Steven is a very happy, energetic character and you’ll love watching him figure out how to conquer his gem powers, one of them being using his saliva for its healing powers. Who wouldn’t want to watch a show with magical saliva?
2. "Gravity Falls"
This show is for those who like mystery. And even those who don’t, it’s just an all around great show. It follows the Pines twins as they discover new secrets about the city they’re visiting for the summer. Dipper is the lead investigator and his sister Mabel is the charismatic counter to his serious demeanor. The show has the ability to take you on an emotional trip in less than 30 minutes. And it’s packed with adult humor, so it’s nothing like your typical cartoon on Disney Channel.
3. "Star Vs. The Forces of Evil"
The theme song alone will make you fall in love with this show. It also describes pretty much everything you need to know about the show: “It's gonna get a little weird, gonna get a little wild/ I ain't from round here, I'm from another dimension/ It's gonna get a little weird, gonna have a good time/ I ain't from round here, I'm from another woo-hoo! Yea-ah! I'm talking rainbows, I'm talking puppies. Puh-puh-puh-puh-puh-puh-puh-puuuhh!”
Magic, multiple dimensions, weirdness, rainbows, and puppies. Who could say no to a show like this?
4. "Regular Show"
"Regular Show" is about two slackers who work in a park. They’re average guys that like to eat and play video games, and try to avoid doing actual work. Their regular attempts to slack off usually lead to surreal, extreme, and often supernatural misadventures. And if that’s not a selling point, there are always awesome catch phrases or songs that are fun to repeat to your friends.
5. "Girl Meets World"
If you’ve ever been a fan of "Boy Meets World," you have to watch this amazing show on Disney Channel. The writers of the show are the same writers from "Boy Meets World" and the producers are Corey and Topanga themselves, so the story line isn’t too far off from classic "Boy Meets World." And the cameos from characters from its predecessor alone makes this show a must watch. And throw in the additional drama, life discussions, and occasional love triangle; I don’t see how anyone could not watch this show!
Even though most, if not all, of us
are in our late teens or early twenties, aren’t we all still kids at
heart? So what’s wrong with expressing
that by watching cartoons occasionally? I highly recommend watching these five—and I promise not to judge if you don’t.
