Last Saturday, January 27th, I attended the Khalid concert in New York City. Though I only decided to go the night before, and thus my ticket was more expensive that I would ordinarily be alright with purchasing, I would highly recommend the concert to all “American Teens.”
Khalid mentioned that he had performed in New York City on the same day last year and only 300 people came to his show. That night, though, thousands of fans filled the audience, singing his songs until their voices ached and screaming his name.
A lot can change in a year.
Radio City Music Hall in Midtown Manhattan (the home of the Rockettes!) provided the perfect venue for the performance. Its centralized location was extremely convenient — only a nine minute cab ride from Penn Station! In addition, entrance to the show was easy and the plush seats in the Orchestra were luxurious.
Predictably, he began the show with “American Teen,” and immediately launched into “Let’s Go” afterwards. After that strong, upbeat start, he played a few slower songs that I hadn't heard before. Just as my energy began to wane, though, “Location” and “Young, Dumb and Broke” jumpstarted it.
A piece of advice: make sure you know all of his songs, not just the radio favorites, before you go!
Even if you're not a die hard fan, though, the concert is still well worth it. It ran just two hours in total (including the DJ) so unlike music festivals and shows with multiple openers, it wasn't a huge time drain. It was, however, one of the most enjoyable nights of my life.
At one point, I turned to my friend and exclaimed, “Wait, he's like, a really good dancer!” It's true, he was. And the show was, like, really good too.
