Is Kevin Gates a Coon?

Why some celebrities shouldn't speak on #BlackLivesMatter.

The #BlackLivesMatter movement has been very live and direct since its creation on July 13, 2013, after the wrongful shooting death of Trayvon Martin. Media coverage has swamped the world with the help of social media and those who support the movement despite their race, color, or ethnicity. Supporters range from politicians to civilians and even the new "leaders" of today's time, which include celebrities. Many celebrities have used their talents and business connections to create their own platforms that support this movement, and others are simply not on board.

Rapper, Kevin Gates, should possibly join the coon train alongside Stacey Dash, unfortunately. He once stated that he agreed with Miss Dash because "It's only two type of people in life: real people and fake people. They got these people talking about 'Black Lives Matter'...Man, ALL lives matter!" Then he goes to describe how he "wasn't" victimized by police, and everything that happened to him while in police custody occurred because he was behaving like a "n----r". Watch below.

Sounds like a coon to me, which is “a black actor or actress, who takes roles that stereo-typically portrays black people. They think they’ve made it, but they are slaves to the same images.”

Things didn’t stop here in regards to Kevin’s rant. Kevin continued to vocalize why he felt the way he felt via social media videos and regarded the #BlackLivesMatter movement as “bullshit” due to the occurrence of black on black crime. As a Black and Puerto-Rican American from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, I expected his viewpoints to be VERY different, especially since he claimed to have been “beaten” by police himself.

When Kevin made these statements, I don’t think he considered the difference between the two (black on black crime versus police brutality/white on black crime). Black on black crime occurs due to the systematic oppression that we have been placed in. Blacks are the majorities in these “hoods” where black on black crime is the most dominant that lack resources, opportunities, things to do, and complete family dynamics. Therefore, gangs and illegal activities are bound to occur among a population that has been taught to fear one another and those who are “different” from them. It’s not a matter of “I killed you because you are black.” It’s a matter of survival and bad programming of the mental viewpoint we have of one another. It’s simply not the same, though both occurrences are detrimental to the Black community.

Kevin continued to dig a hole for himself with his reckless videos after responding to the Baton Rouge Police shooting. He agreed with this mishap because police officers were shot and in his eyes this the “right” thing to do because “a bunch of n----s hooping and hollering ain’t right” and “us, talking and all that ain’t right”. Watch below.

He also described an incident where his wife experienced victimization at the hands of police and how he “made a vow to her” that assured (in his mind) that it would never happen to her again. However, if that’s the case wouldn’t you have stopped it from occurring the first time and wasn’t your wife behaving like a “nigger” for this to occur? He did say people become victimized from police brutality because they were “acting like n-----s.” Also, if “all lives matter” why didn’t the lives of those police officers matter and why would you condone violence among the human race? These are questions that needs answers.

Kevin Gates is the prime example of why most celebrities should refrain from expressing themselves in regards to world issues. Most are simply unaware, uniformed, and may have forgotten their roots. Black Lives Matter is not about defending black lives for obvious wrongful doings. It’s about the black lives that have been victimized wrongfully, killed unjustifiably, and the lack of lawful response when these things happen.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
