If you're a pop culture junkie like me then you’ve undoubtedly heard of the legal issues that pop singer Kesha has been going through. Many of you will remember when “Ke$ha” got her breakthrough back in 2010 with the hit single “Tik Tok,” and boy has she come a long way since then. Her career went smoothly for a number of years until it hit a bump in the road, or more of a massive heap of heartache, stress, and legal fees. Since then, Kesha has dropped the $ from her name, which seems to hint at a new level of “maturity” in her career.
Back in 2014, Kesha Rose Sebert, more commonly known as Kesha, filed a legal suit against her producer Dr. Luke that would free her from her contracts with he producer and the label he works for, Kemosabe Records. The suit said that Dr. Luke "sexually, physically, verbally, and emotionally abused [Kesha] to the point where [she] nearly lost her life.” Unfortunately, not much happened with the case until February of this year, when an injunction that would allow her to start recording again, without having to work with Dr. Luke, was denied by the court. After the injunction was denied, many celebrities came to her side, none more so than Lady Gaga, who earlier this year released a song about sexual abuse titled “Till it Happens to You.” Sadly, this emotional support did little to help with Kesha’s large amount of legal fees, until none other than fellow pop artist Taylor Swift donated $250K to help Kesha pay the aforementioned legal fees. Since then, Kemosabe Records has graciously allowed Kesha and producer Zedd to release the single “True Colors,” a new version of his previously recorded song.
The song “True Colors” is now one of my favorite songs, and as soon as I’d heard about its release, I went on iTunes and purchased a copy of it. The song itself is very inspiring and I couldn't think of any other way for her to make a comeback. Kesha has shown a great amount of strength through all of this and I now consider her one of my personal heroes. It takes courage to face the person who's caused this much strife, let alone in the public eye.
Kesha is still fighting her legal battle, but it may become easier for her because of her millions of supporters around the world. My thoughts and prayers are with Kesha, and anyone else who’s experienced abuse of any kind, and I hope that yours will be too.
