If you have a Twitter account and are an active tweeter (or reader), you have seen the outrage surrounding VogueIndia's choice to feature Kendall Jenner on the cover of their special edition titled the “10th Anniversary Collector's Edition.” Vogue India tried to respond to the backlash by saying there are multiple special eitions, and since Vogueis an international brand, they want to feature international supermodels.
But that’s just it. Perhaps Vogue India is a part of an international brand, but Vogue India itself is not created to be geared towards the international community. Vogue India is designed to help readers “Find the latest news, trends & tips from India's premier beauty & fashion magazine” per their own website.
So instead of perpetuating the colonial mindset and turning back the clock on all of the hard work done by people to redefine beauty standards to include every ethnicity, why choose a pretty white girl who said that Indian food was disgusting? Why not give some beautiful Indian women the credit they deserve?
Here are 8 Indian models that deserved a feature in Vogue India:
1. Aishwarya Rai
Miss World 1994. She has since become a wildly successful model and actress, and she continues to be referred to by many as the most beautiful woman in the world.
2. Ujjwala Raut
Credited with being India's first supermodel, Ujjwala has walked down the runways for nearly every couture designer in the book: Yves Saint-Laurent, Roberto Cavalli, Hugo Boss, Cynthia Rowley, Diane von Furstenberg, Dolce & Gabbana, Betsey Johnson, Gucci, Givenchy, Valentino, Oscar de la Renta, and Emilio Pucci. She has even walked in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

4. Sushmita Sen
Sushmita is an actress and model who rose to fame after winning Miss Universe in 1994. She defied what was considered socially acceptable in India by adopting a girl and becoming a single mother at the age of 25.
