Keep The Love Going After This Valentine's Day: 13 Decades of Love

Following 13 of the most romantic couples between 1896 and 2012 as well as how much the film industry has evolved in the last 13 decades.

1. "The Kiss" (1896).

"The Kiss" is an 18 second actuality starring May Irwin and John Rice. This short silent clip was actually one of the first kisses recorded on camera and shown to an audience. In the late 1800s, film had just started to take off and many of the moviegoers thought it was odd and rather disturbing to watch. Of course to us today, we don't find onscreen kissing bizarre at all.

2. "A Romance of the Rail" (1903)

"A Romance of the Rail" follows the story of an engaged couple taking a romantic train ride, and end up getting married on it.

3. "Die Puppe" (1919)

A man falls in love with a puppet in this German film "Die Puppe" (The Doll).

4. "Sunrise: A Song Of Two Humans" (1927)

This next silent film is a little eerie. A city woman tries to convince a man to drown his wife and run away with her. Though he decides he better not, this is one romantic scenes between the city woman and farmer.

5. "City Lights" (1931)

A scene from the famous Charlie Chaplin’s (also known as “The Tramp”) "City Lights," where a woman falls in love him, despite being a poor man who is always being picked on.

6. "Gone With The Wind" (1940)

As we finally enter a world filled with sound and colored movies, "Gone With The Wind" was a great romance film in the 1940s. Southern belle Scarlett O’Hara falls in love with a married man, who tells her she “needs kissing, badly.”

7. "Singing In The Rain" (1952)

One of the most romantic, greatly choreographed dances from the musical, "Singing In The Rain."

8. "Breakfast at Tiffany’s" (1961)

Holly and Paul’s first mutual kiss in "Breakfast at Tiffany’s," starring the beautiful Audrey Hepburn.

9. "Love Story" (1970)

"Love Story" (no, not by Taylor Swift) has one of the greatest love quotes that is still used today, “Love means never having to say you’re sorry.”

10. "Say Anything…" (1989)

Cameron Crowe's "Say Anything…" is loved by many. One of the most iconic scenes in the movie is of course the boombox serenade, which has been reenacted in many other films from then on.

11. "The Titanic" (1997)

The famous Jack and Rose duo from "The Titanic," who conquered many horrific obstacles together despite their opposite backgrounds and reoccurring family drama

12. "The Notebook" (2004)

The scene from "The Notebook" where Noah and Allie get stuck in the rain.

13. "Silver Linings Playbook" (2012)

Pat chases Tiffany one last time in "Silver Linings Playbook" after leaving his wife.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
