1. "The Kiss" (1896).
"The Kiss" is an 18 second actuality starring May Irwin and John Rice. This short silent clip was actually one of the first kisses recorded on camera and shown to an audience. In the late 1800s, film had just started to take off and many of the moviegoers thought it was odd and rather disturbing to watch. Of course to us today, we don't find onscreen kissing bizarre at all.
2. "A Romance of the Rail" (1903)
"A Romance of the Rail" follows the story of an engaged couple taking a romantic train ride, and end up getting married on it.
3. "Die Puppe" (1919)
A man falls in love with a puppet in this German film "Die Puppe" (The Doll).
4. "Sunrise: A Song Of Two Humans" (1927)
This next silent film is a little eerie. A city woman tries to convince a man to drown his wife and run away with her. Though he decides he better not, this is one romantic scenes between the city woman and farmer.
5. "City Lights" (1931)
A scene from the famous Charlie Chaplin’s (also known as “The Tramp”) "City Lights," where a woman falls in love him, despite being a poor man who is always being picked on.
6. "Gone With The Wind" (1940)
As we finally enter a world filled with sound and colored movies, "Gone With The Wind" was a great romance film in the 1940s. Southern belle Scarlett O’Hara falls in love with a married man, who tells her she “needs kissing, badly.”
