Adjusting from high school to college is very difficult. You come from a place where you are comfortable, with your friends and family around to support you through all your mistakes and all your successions. You may have played a sport, or you were in a club. Now you’re starting an entirely new life, without your friends and family and cozy place to come home to. It’s your first couple of weeks in college and you're stressed, or tired, or homesick or all three. Here are some ways you can “keep calm and carry on.”
1. De-stress
Try some morning yoga. Yes, it’s going to suck when your alarm goes off at 7 am and you don’t have class until 8, but you will not regret it. Go outside, walk to the prettiest part of campus and sit down, stretch, breathe and relax. College is stressful and a few deep breaths before classes in the morning will get you through your day.
2. Take naps
This one is obvious and it may not seem like you have time for it on certain days, but it’s very important to get some sleep so you can focus in class. Coffee can only do so much when you're running on 4 hours of sleep. Even a 20-minute power nap will help you get through your day.
3. Don’t forget to call
Or FaceTime, send texts,or even mail letters home. A FaceTime once a week will make your family so happy and you’ll realize you needed it more than you thought as well. Sending your mom a daily text just letting her know you're thinking of her will keep her from worrying too much and writing a cute letter to your little brother or sister will make their day.
College isn’t easy, I have learned that from only 4 weeks into my freshmen year, but if you follow these steps, you’ll power through.
