Kayaking The Broad River

Summer is in full swing in Athens, and summer session classes seem to be taking up a lot of people's times. If you need a weekend release but don't want to travel far, then you should plan a day trip kayaking down the Broad River.

The Broad River is located about thirty minutes from Athens in neighboring Madison County. It is a popular attraction for locals and students alike. The Broad River has two outposts that you can choose from: The Sandbar and Broad River Output (BRO).

They are both very good options and cost about the same. During the week the cost to rent a kayak is $20 for both, and on the weekends/holidays, it is $25. They also provide shuttles that pick you up and drop you off. At BRO you put in at the outpost, and then are picked up and brought back. At the Sandbar, you park at the end of the river and are shuttled up the river to float down.

BRO and Sandbar also allow behaved dogs but make sure to provide a life jacket for them beforehand. They can be purchased at any local pet store. Both outposts recommend that if you want to bring alcohol or a packed lunch that you bring a cooler that locks on the top. Also, bring a bag that you can put trash in because littering not cool.

The float trip takes around 3-4 hours depending on if you or your group decides to take a break. The trip runs along about a 6.5-mile scenic section of the river. During one section of your float, you paddle through a Native American fishing weir and pass by the remains of an old covered bridge.

The section of the Broad River that you kayak is a very easily float, and is great for beginners. Normal water levels are usually from 2.5 feet to 5 feet. At most, the more challenging parts are rated as Class II rapids. The trip features many small cascading rapids, a waterfall, and the well-known "Rooster Tail Falls." The waterfall drop is the most fun part, but it is on a small incline.

Day trips on the Broad River are fun, but you can also make it an overnight trip as well. Broad River Outpost offers campsites that you can rent. You can paddle the upper section of the river, camp out and then enjoy the next portion of the river the next day. Sandbar offers cabins you rent, and also tent camping.

Overall, it's an enjoyable experience. It's inexpensive and you don't have to be a skilled kayaker to participate. It is also easy practice for skilled kayakers who want to just relax or work on their techniques.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
