Unless you have no WiFi and no friends, you’ve probably heard the latest 411: Kanye West is running for president in 2020. He made the shocking announcement during his acceptance speech at the VMAs after winning the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Kanye is a lot of things, but even according to Yeezus himself, he’s “not no politician, bro!” So why then, just a few minutes later, did he announce his big plans? Well, who really knows? After all, he was admittedly high at the time. If Kanye West does, however, follow through in 2020, he won’t be the worst candidate we’ve seen, and here’s why:
He’s A Family Man
Whether you love or hate Kimye, you have to admit that Kanye looks happier with his family than ever before. He’s always quick to defend Kim and supports her no matter what. A quick image search of Kanye and his daughter, North, brings up numerous pictures of a smiling Kanye, which is a rare sight. If you consider America to be a family as well, then Kanye West would make a loyal father to his millions of children.
He Connects With Millennials
In any important election (think high school student government), popularity plays a large role in who will be crowned the victor. Since Kanye connects with our generation, which will soon take over this great nation, he is a shoo-in for president. His music is relatable, his style is arguably trendy if you squint a little, and he actually cares about what American youth have to say. During his VMA speech, he exclaimed that “we not gonna teach low self-esteem and hate to our kids. We gonna teach our kids that they can be something.” We need a president that will believe in our generation of hooligans when no one else does.
He’s Honest
So maybe Kanye doesn’t always make the best decisions that paint him in the best light, but at least he is honest about them. He didn’t try to hide the fact that he had smoked a little something before his VMA speech, or that he regretted infamously interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech years ago. In a world that is so full of deception and manipulation, Kanye’s honesty is a refreshing change.
He’s Dedicated
As one of the best-selling artists of all time, it’s hard to think that Kanye wasn’t taken seriously when he first pursued his rap career because he didn't portray a “gangsta image” (Wikipedia). But Kanye never gave up on his dreams. After a horrible car accident left him with his jaw wired shut, he recorded his first song, which led him to stardom. Now, not only is he a wildly successful rapper, he is also a songwriter, record producer, and fashion designer. He is passionate about music and claims he “will die for the art! For what [he] believes in!” Who wouldn't want a president that is that passionate about his beliefs?
If you still aren’t convinced, you aren’t alone. Good luck Kanye, you’re going to need it.
