"Man, that party was awesome! I'm glad that we choose to go tonight! Can you drive home? Oh, you've been drinking too. That's OK I've only had a few!"
This simple conversation could very well be the last conversation any of our friends could have.
While this is a theoretical conversation, this act happens way too often. Drunk Driving is never OK in any circumstance.
This is definitely something that hits home for me. I do not tolerate any of my friends drinking and driving at all. When it comes down to it, I will have a knock down drag out to get their keys away from them. Even when they may have only had one! Why, you ask? Because there is always a risk of injuring not only yourself but also the driver that is on the road as well -- or the pedestrian crossing the street at a red light that you're too drunk to stop at. It's not always about protecting yourself.
When you've had a close friend actually be killed from a driver that has been under the influence, you would have the same feeling about this topic as I do. It is never, ever a good feeling to see a post on a friend's Facebook wall saying, "Rest easy dear friend" or "Many prayers for the family as heaven gained a new angel today!"
Is that one drink worth traumatizing so many people? Yeah, you may make it home without getting into a wreck but does that still make it OK? Hell no, it is never OK to even think about drinking even one and driving! All it takes is that one beer to show up on a breathalyzer test. All it takes is that one beer to say that you are driving under the influence. All it takes is that one beer to ruin the rest of your life...or someone else's.
When you take the risk of drinking and driving, you're damaging much more than just yourself. Let's say that you've had a few. You don't have a designated driver so you get this brilliant idea to drive back to your place. Well, your vision has been impaired slightly and you're obviously not able to walk a straight line. But that's OK, keep on trying to drive home! You'll make it in a breeze, and be home before you know it. Except you won't, and neither will the mother and son that was in the car that you pulled out in front of! Let's just take a moment and let that sink in. You've just been in a wreck that not only you have been killed in, but you also killed someone else. You're not making it home to sit at the dinner table with your parents. Instead your parents are on the way to the hospital to identify your body. Neither is the mom and son who also died. Just think, they were on their way back from, let's say, visiting grandma and grandpa. Little did the grandparent think that she would be burying her daughter and grandson in a few short days. Why? Because of your stupid decision to have a few drinks and drive!
Let's recap of how many people have been affected by this decision. We have you, the mother and son, your family and friends, the mother's family and friends and the son's family and friends. A countless number of people are now grieving all because of a very stupid decision to drive under the influence.
So please, I am actually begging you. If you plan on drinking, please order an Uber or get a taxi. No life is worth driving under the influence!
