I Hope I'm Just Like Her One Day

Why only celebrate our moms one day a year when they do so much for us every single day?

People always say “That apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” and usually, it is to be taken in a negative way. But when I receive this comment about my mom and me, I see it as one of the greatest compliments. My mom is my role model. And I know there are millions of people that would say the same thing, but I truly and deeply mean it.

My mom is a businesswoman. She has it all together. I have never seen her leave the house without looking completely put-together, hair and makeup done. She frowns on the fact that I love to wear t-shirts, simply because she’d rather I be wearing something nicer.

My mom is an incredible friend. She stays in touch with almost every person she’s ever known. It’s amazing to me to watch her value her friendships that go all the way back to her childhood days. It's even more shocking to see her send 400 Christmas cards to each of her friends every year.

My mom is a feminist. She has taught me never to let anyone stop me from doing anything I put my heart to. She has shown me what being a strong woman is supposed to look like. She gives Sheryl Sandberg a run for her money.

My mom is a cheerleader. Although she works all day every day, even on the weekends, I can’t think of many times she’s missed out on something in my life, whether it was a basketball game or giving me a hug after a long day.

My mom is supportive, comforting and my biggest fan. She is always there for me, in the best and the worst times. She’ll step out of any meeting if I call her, just because she knows how important she is to me.

My mom is my role model. And I hope I’m just like her one day. She has the ability to balance her successful career, maintain so many relationships and remain to be my biggest fan -- and that is truly special. I'm so glad that I was named after her; that means I'll always have a piece of her within me. I'm so glad I look so much like her. I love when people tell me I am a spitting image of her; It is a complement, to say the least.

So I hope I’m just like her one day -- she is an incredible person, and I’m so lucky that she’s my mom.

Thank you for giving me some hard shoes to fill. Thank you for reminding me to reach for the stars. Thank you for laying the foundation for what I aspire to be.

Happy Mother's Day. I want you to be celebrated all year, not just one day a year. You mean the world to me. I love you.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
