I Don't Like My Curly Hair... I Love It!

And here's why you should love your curly hair, too!

Growing up I hated my curly hair because it was big and unruly... Well, it's still all those things, but as I've gotten older I've learned that I don't like my curly hair... I love it. So in celebration, here are six reasons why you and I shouldn't just like our curly hair, but love it.

1. You feel like Beyoncé

I will never know what Beyoncé feels like, but my curls definitely make me feel like a queen. I love the feeling of my curls being free and fierce. They are obnoxious sometimes, but I love that. I adore how they make a statement and want to be known. There is something about whipping my curls around and twirling them around my fingers that make me feel like a savage. They give me a little boost about myself.

2. It looks like you actually tried even though you didn’t

A lot of times when I'm out in public people will tell me how much they love my curls, and how it must have taken so much time to prep. The truth is I got out of bed fifteen minutes before class, slapped some water in my hair, and walked out the door. I am a worn out college student, and I pinky promise zero effort was put into my hair. That's the beauty of the curl, though. I do nothing to it and people get impressed, but no one should be. I literally haven't brushed my hair in a week, so there is that.

3. Messy buns actually work for you

If curly hair could be a person it would be the unruly child that throws fits at Walmart and gets whatever they want. Curly hair has a mind of its own, and most of the time it's wild. A lot of time its wildness is a pain in the butt, however, it also is the greatest gift. Curly hair is already messy, so all you have to do is put it up, and boom, cute messy bun. No effort needed, thank goodness.

4. Curly hair is a packaged deal

Okay, this one might sound weird, but I actually care about my curly hair a lot. I see it like a sidekick. It makes me a better person and makes me very happy. It's like my best accessory. My hair and I never go anywhere without each other, and I have this connection with it. I know it's weird, but it's all good. I'm not ashamed of my obsession.

5. People think you’re a magician

I always giggle when people ask me what makes my hair so curly. I giggle even harder at their reaction when I tell them I just put water on it. “What, that’s it? Just water?” Yes, just water. I promise you I’m not Houdini and I didn’t sell my soul to Satan to get my hair so curly. I literally just put H20 on it, but thanks for thinking I was magical.

6. No curl is made equally

No curl is the same. Every curly headed individual has a unique curl and style, and that is my favorite part about curly hair. It gives you a community of people who understand the struggle of the curl, but it also allows you to feel special. Knowing that no one has the exact same make-up of curl as you rocks. You are you, and that’s the best realization.

Curly hair can be annoying and uncontrollable, but it also can be fabulous and fun. So to all my curly headed friends, keep on going with your bad self. We love your curls, and so should you.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register.
