Valentine's Day is Just Another Tuesday

Why my husband and I will not be celebrating

I don't understand Valentine's day.

Maybe it's because I'm diabetic and try to keep chocolate and other treats to a minimum in my house.

Maybe it's because I don't like having huge amounts of flowers in the house.

Maybe it's because I'm uneducated and don't know where it comes from.

Maybe it's because I don't know why we celebrate it.

In my head, though, I don't remember anything that could have happened to make all Americans (I'm not sure if it's recognized in other countries as a holiday) be a little nicer to those that treat them the best that day.

In fact, today is just another day for me. I will be going to the same three classes as always, rising at about the same time as the sun, and getting home well after it has set. I will tell my husband I love him, just as I do every day and kiss him before we go our own ways to school. There are no special plans, fancy dinners, or adult "desserts" at the end of the night. Just two tired people curling up in the same bed to sleep after a long day apart.

What I don't understand is why this upsets people. They are either dumbfounded that we haven't "found a way" to make the day special or just look at me with sad eyes expressing how much "that must suck".

It doesn't suck; it's beautiful and normal and perfect. We tell each other how much we love each other almost every day verbally. If not that, then it's me cooking dinner for him or him massaging my neck or some other form of service we can do for each other.

We are both very independent people who feel spoiled when the other does the smallest thing for them. We know that our lives are busy and always changing right now and that that's ok. We have goals and plans for our future together that we are (sometimes impatiently) waiting for the right time. We're smart enough to know that right now is the time to put our heads down and finish school, but that we don't have to face it alone.

We don't need a special day to remind each other of our love; we do it every day.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
