A Reminder That Junior Year Holds Big And Exciting Changes For You

Hey You,

Can you believe you're already a junior? You're already halfway through your college career, already halfway through the last few years you have before you truly, truly enter into adulthood - and look at you already. You're already moving out of that dorm room, into a real apartment, a place where you have to set up your own electricity and internet and all these other things that you didn't have to worry about as little as a few months ago.

Yes, it's scary, but it also means that you're growing up, and that's a good thing. You're getting older, but you're also getting stronger and smarter and wiser, and you're going to do good things. These last two years were good, but this year is going to be even better. You're going to be working, volunteering, leading clubs, and being part of organizations you love. You're also - and most importantly - taking classes that will hopefully help you to shape you're future. Yes, a future that I know you're still not sure about.

You still don't know what you're going to do after graduation, and you're still not sure about majors and minors. I know it's scary, but trust me, you're going to figure it out. You've figured things out before, and I know this seems more important than all of those things, but I know you're going to make a decision. Take advice from all of those people that care about you and want to help you out, do your research, and have a little faith. I have full confidence and faith in you, and I know you're going to figure out what you're doing before this coming year is up.

I know life is scary right now, and I know that college and general adulthood is more than a little intimidating at times, but you're growing up, and you're going to get through it. I know that you're already starting to worry about all of those tough classes you signed up for, and I know living off campus and having real bills to pay already has you slightly on edge, but you're you, and you are more than capable of handling it. You have great friends, best friends, and so many people at school and at home that love you, and you're going to do great things this year.

So get excited. Junior year is your year, and when it comes down to it, you don't have many of those college years left. So enjoy it, enjoy the birthdays, friends, classes, fun events, and everything in between. Enjoy everything you do this year, and remember to make the most of it.

So stop worrying, and start packing your car up, packing your parents' car up, and getting ready to decorate your new apartment. Start buying your favorite back-to-school supplies that you know you'll probably never use, but you always end up buying anyways because you think they're cute, and who knows maybe you'll need some cute post-it notes and gel pens one day. Keep being you, keep doing what you love, and everything else will fall into place.

I'm ready for what this year has to hold, and I'm even more ready to see what it has to hold for you.

Love,
A slightly nervous, mostly excited college student

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
