With the holiday season in full swing, the feeling of family obligations and financial stress weighs on people when they shouldn't. So often we get caught up in the ridiculous notion that the world will stop spinning if we leave or stop contributing our part. The reality is that the world will keep spinning regardless and it's doing you harm to believe otherwise.
The other day as I was driving back to my house in order to pay bills, I found myself dreading to go back to daily stresses. After I paid my bills and checked in with my roommates, I realized that this was my opportunity to jump ship and abandon all responsibilities. Instead of staying and stressing over new jobs, the upcoming semester, and a million other things that I can't control--I left.
And damn, did it feel good! To just pack up and walk out with no intentions, but to enjoy time with people I have taken for granted and to find some snow. Learning to take a break, a real break, is what everyone needs. I've been a traveler, but I also have always been a planner so learning to take a real break has been a valuable lesson that we all need to learn.
