Odyssey

If you're reading this, there's a good chance that you've seen an article or two from Odyssey on your newsfeed. And with seeing those articles, you're probably wondering what Odyssey actually is, so let me enlighten you super quick.

Odyssey is a social media platform for millennials, ages 16-28 to let their voices be heard by sharing their writing, poetry, photography and videography with a national audience. Cool, no? Honestly, I've been creating for Odyssey for over a year now, and it made my college experience so much better than I had expected. It's for sure been a highlight of my collegiate career. So why not join in on the fun?! Here's why you should sign up to be a creator too!

1. Friendships.

We've all been there, making friends in college is low-key terrifying. So why not find a friend group that has similar interests to you? Many times, you meet via email or text, which is way less stressful, and then you become close with everyone on the team by the time that first meeting rolls around. And having that support system of twenty or so friends is extremely comforting, especially during the struggles of finals week!

2. Freedom.

You can literally write about ANYTHING YOU WANT. The freedom is yours, and you can share whatever you want. How cool is that?! You either write weekly, bi-weekly or monthly, and you can create anything you wish with a national audience! Your ideas and articles could even go viral! Your ideas could easily make a real-life difference!

3. Develops your writing skills.

Before Odyssey, I'll be honest-- my writing was sub-par. But with the guidance of my editor-in-chiefs, fellow creators and contributing editors, I've been able to work on my writing skills, and gain more confidence in my writing abilities. My grades even saw an increase when it came to my writing. I have Odyssey to thank for myself getting more comfortable with my writing overall, and I'll always be grateful for that.

4. Flexible schedules.

Everyone understands that being a college student is stressful and a constant battle of time management. Thus, the editors are down to work around your schedules! Deadlines are super flexible and everyone is super lenient and helpful with whatever issue or scheduling issues you may have. This is a super stressful time of your life, and they get that!

5. Resume builder.

Realistically, creating for Odyssey is like having an internship for a nationwide social media platform! Pretty impressive, no? Imagine the look on potential employer's faces when they see that you are part of a nationwide platform where your work is seen by thousands of viewers. That could for sure set you apart from other applicants!

6. It's just fun!

Being involved in Odyssey is honestly one of the most fun and rewarding experiences ever! You get to be yourself, and meet some pretty cool and fun people along the way! You get to make personal and professional connections you could very easily have for the rest of your life, and you get out there in the world of social media! What's cooler than that?!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
