I have had a job since I was a sophomore in high school and the only reason I had my first job was because my parents told me I had to get one. I was not thrilled to say the least. It took me a few months to start getting used to working on the weekends instead of sleeping until 10 am and then going to hangout with friends.
Eventually I grew to like working so much that I got another job and then another. I had three jobs my junior year of high school. Yea, I know it sounds crazy but I loved it. I loved that I was becoming more independent and confident in myself. I was able to pay for things myself. I also came out of my shell. I had always been loud around my close friends and family but outside of that circle I was a little shy. After working as a waitress for two years I have come far from being that quiet girl. Now I can have a conversation with anyone about anything and that has helped me make friends countless times.
When I decided that it was time to get a job to make a little more cash I went and got my CNA certificate. Since I had the new skill of being able to step out of my comfort zone I was able to make friends easily while I took the class. Once I passed my CNA exam I got a job at a nursing home and I have never enjoyed working so much.
I learned so many skills from communication to self-discipline. I also never took anything for granted. Since I had a job and payed for things myself I took better care of my things. I learned the value of time and money. Not only did I learn many valuable life lessons but I also met many lifelong friends. At the time I couldn't understand why my parents wanted me to get a job but now I can't even imagine not having a job.
