Recently, a few friends and I wanted to have an outing together, that could bond us all and bring us closer. Well, we all took a vote and things like rock climbing, and fishing and hiking all came up on the ballad.
I, on the other hand, suggested something a bit more dainty and light like the zoo or skating for example. Low and behold, one of my friends suggested that we all attend her farm in the deep boroughs of Hattiesburg, Miss. ( SAY WHAAATAH?) A FARM?? No Ma'am!! Skeptical at first, I decided that I would be a team player and go. On the way there, I was very nervous and scared. I didn't know what to expect, my family didn't raise me on a farm so this was definitely new to me.
As we pulled up, everything I imagined this farm to be, was true. A small, quaint home to the right and to the left was a field of fresh, pretty flowers. As we followed the host to the back of the house, I found myself standing in front of a small, wooden table and bucket full of water.
Me: "What are we going to do with this?"
They responded with "We're picking corn."
.. astounded...
I sat down in astonishment to reflect on why I made this decision to come here in the first place. I quickly put on my safari hat and pushed my Ray Bans back and walked over to what I though was beautiful from a distance, became my nightmare as I inched closer. As the others were enjoying themselves, I stood there thoughtfully thinking of what was in those two rows.
.. bugs
spiders..
failure.. perhaps
and lots of deep holes..
I smiled and shrugged off the skepticism and went in for the kill. As the day progressed on, I began to have more and more fun. Everyone starting picking fresh grape tomatoes and throwing them together, which helped ease the nervousness of being their in the first place. We ate fresh salad, and lasagna .. some of my favorite foods. In this new setting, I took in all of natures beauty, I took pictures, and (watched) them shuck corn. Although, I didnt want to do it, I was impressed by what they were teaching me, and to learn about everyone and their background.. As I stand hovered over them, I was asking tons and tons of questions.. Learning, serving, and most of all sweating , I had a great time and enjoyed the hot sweet country sun! something that I see in movies, I was experiencing for myself IN REAL LIFE. One of the guys talked me into getting on a four wheeler and riding the acres of the land. I said okay and hopped on...... you can only imagine the dramatic add libs that went on in those woods.
Thinking that it was only going to be a few circles around the field. He turns back and asks, "Jay do you trust me?" Me, "NO! HELL NO!!" (my inner jay told me) somehow the happiness and goodness of the day propelled me to answer.. yes!
As soon as I said that we went into the woods.......
....... bump
scratch...
( jay screams)
.. he laughed... ...
bump
scratch...
SWERVE!!!!
(Jay screams)
CATCH YOUR HAT!!
she grabs it... giggles... turn, bump.. scratch.. sting..
(I was just cut by some tree)
As we made our way out of Narnia, it was full of leaves and bugs and critters. By the end of the day I was completely satisfied with what happened that day.
On my left arm remains a trophy, more so a reminder of the good times I shared with my fellow friends, and that's something I will forever remember.
P.S.
That day, I learned what its like to actually sit down and really meet people, although we are all diverse and serve to the best of our ability, we each have a unique story to tell. Mine perhaps, was this was one :)
