It’s graduation season and young people everywhere are freaking out!
Whether or not you are graduating from high school or college this year, as a young adult, you are most likely always freaking out about the future.
Everyone from Uber drivers to distant family members is constantly asking me what I want to do, and this ever-impending question is always lurking around the next corner. It’s impossible to get away from.
I, just like many of my peers, came to USC thinking that I was certain of my major, only to have a moment of crisis my second semester in. I had planned on majoring in journalism since my junior year of high school, but when I got to college, I realized that I was much more passionate about political science and social movements.
It took me an entire stressful semester to contemplate the transition to another major, but as soon as I made the leap, despite my family’s protests, I was glad that I did.
This time in your life is your time to be selfish. We are only given a small amount of time to decide what we want to do for the rest of our lives! It does not matter how many transitional periods you have to go through, you should do what makes you feel the most fulfilled.
Being confused and unsure is scary because it always seems as if everyone else around you has everything perfectly figured out. But, everyone is struggling with the same things that you are, no matter their background, class, race, gender, or path in life. At this age, nobody knows what they are doing.
I’ve come to realize that being an “adult” is just trying your best and pretending that you know what you’re doing, until one day, you actually do have your life figured out.
Even as you are graduating, you may still not know what you are doing, but as long as you take life one day at a time and seize the moment, you will be happy.
So, don’t be afraid of life, of adulthood, because although it is scary, you are not alone and your feelings of insecurity will not last forever.
