A few days ago, I looked around my room and decided it was the time. Every girl knows what time I am referring to...
Time to reorganize my closet.
It seems to be that whenever the weather changes, I mentally decide to clean up the clutter of my life. And that starts with my clothes. I pull every piece of clothing I have from my closet and drawers and lay them across my bed and on the floor. I find clothes under my bed and some under the pile of random things on the chair in my room. The chair, which is only ever meant to store the discarded fragments of my life and not be an actual seat.
When I start the process of reorganizing my closet, I always find something I had forgotten about. Sometimes it is a shirt I used to wear all of the time but thought I had lost. Other times I discover clothes that don't fit or that are not my style anymore, clothing I wish I could forget about all together. I laughed for ten minutes straight at the discovery of an old "Powder Puff Girls" jacket.
Most often, I find clothes that I haven't worn in so long and know I never will. That is why it is important to donate your clothes and shoes to charities that can give them to people in need. I always try and gather as many bags as I can and by the end of this day, I had five.
I collected all my winter boots and placed them away under my bed and brought out my flip-flops and sandals. I put away my scarfs and heavy winter coats and hung up my light sweaters and jean jackets. I stored away my long-sleeved shirts and was happy to see my tank tops again. And my favorite part of all was bringing my summer sundresses out from their long winter's sleep to see the light of day again.
To make my life easier I decided, for the first time, to color-coordinate my clothes. As I've gotten older, I can honestly say some mornings I wake up wanting to wear something so specific, like purple. Other days I hate the sight of it. It is all about my mood and organizing my closet this way helps the mornings go a lot smoother.
I also bought a clothing rack to hold some of the clothes that I gravitate to more often. For example, the jacket I always throw on or the t-shirt that looks cute with whatever I pair it with. This helps tremendously and I definitely recommend it if you have the room.
One other trick when reorganizing was to place all of the hangers in my closet and on the rack in the same direction. That way, I can observe what I never pull out to wear and when the time comes to clean out and reorganize again, I can see what I can let go of.
When I was all finished, I was tired. It truly was a full day's work! But looking around my clean, organized room made it all worth it.
