We all laughed at Alec Baldwin and Jimmy Fallon's Donald Trump impressions. We cried and cheered for Meryl Streep's speech about equality (or lack thereof) and for not supporting our new president. But for what? Nothing celebrities say or do will change our president or his mind. Nothing they say or do will revert the changes we opposed, or bring new changes that everyone will agree on. It makes our people look bad, and makes us look bad for not supporting our president.
I'm with everyone who isn't happy about President Donald Trump, but I got over it. I stopped complaining, and I stopped listening to the protests (which got way out of hand). When I heard of Meryl Streep's speech, I was upset. To me, and maybe only me, award shows are for awards. They're for celebrating entertainers and their work, not for complaining about past actions from politicians who run our country. We're all entitled to free speech, but there is a time and place, and the Golden Globes ceremony was neither.
I have to say, I was worried when watching the Grammy Awards a few weeks ago, however I was unimpressed for many other reasons than political banter. I understand the following many of these celebrities have and the power people think they have, but what they actually have is opinions. During an award show, like the Grammy's, I feel that it's more important to focus on the music and work of the artists being honored that night. It's not who can make the longest speech about equality or how much they hate the POTUS. It's about fun, music, and honoring those who create.
Not only are the award shows an issue, but SNL has gone above and beyond with poking fun at the politicians in office. During the election it seemed in better fun, but now it's just overdone. There's no reason to continuously poke fun at the person running our country. It makes the American citizens look very, very poor in the eyes of those around the world. Why not use free speech to promote things that we can change?
