“Enjoy the little things in life because one day you`ll look back and realize they were the big things.” -Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
This quote has been hanging in the hallway of my home for as long as I can remember. Every single day, I walk past that sign in my home, read it, and continue on with my day. It wasn't until recently that I actually took into consideration just how deep that quote is.
The little things in life mean everything. You notice the small things, like the way your mom put notes in your lunch box every day when you were a child, or the way that your boyfriend's lips curve on the ends when he's trying not to laugh about something you said. Life is made up of so many small moments, so I though I would share all of the small things that I've noticed in the past few days.
I noticed this morning how soft the light coming into my shower in the morning is. It's the perfect lighting to make you feel like you're living lavishly, even though you're only taking a shower. When I move out of my parent's house in August, I know that this will be something that I miss.
I've noticed how my best friend's sarcasm is literally the funniest thing in the world. On the other hand, she also gives the world's best advice when needed. Now that I've noticed it, I thank God every single day for it.
I've noticed how I find solace in the poetry section at Barnes and Noble. I swear, I could sit there and read Milk and Honey until my fingers turn blue from flipping the pages so much. I've noticed how I can read poetry for days, but I cannot write poetry.
I've noticed small changes in myself. I've noticed the thicker skin that I've acquired in my work, and how slowly I am beginning to not let insults get to me. I've noticed that I walk with a bit more confidence because I am learning small things about myself that I am liking.
I've noticed how my friends from middle school have slowly reentered my life, and for that I am extremely grateful. I've noticed how we've all changed, but in reality, we are all still just as childish and dreamy as we were back then.
I've noticed how I take all of my pain out into words on paper. I've noticed that a pen on paper does wonders for my soul, even if I don't notice it immediately.
The small things make the biggest difference in life. They are not fleeting, as big moments are. They are steady. They are not staggered. They constantly feed into your life. We only notice the small things after they are gone, and by that time we realize that they were actually the big things.
