It's Okay To Be Human

This is the best advice I've ever received.

One of my favorite pieces of advice I've ever received is that it's okay to be human. When I first heard this, it confused me. I am a human, so why do I have to be told it's okay to act like one? I didn't know it at first, but this is definitely something I needed to be reminded of. I am a human, and it's okay to act like one.

Humans have a lot of emotions and everyone handles them differently. Sometimes, we may feel like we are on a time limit or there is a right and wrong way of dealing with emotions. I personally will feel emotions and try at all costs to hide them. I don't like other people knowing if I am upset, due to the unwanted attention and uncomfortable sympathy that comes with that. This advice put a lot of things into perspective for me when dealing with emotions. As a human who has emotions, there is no handbook on how to deal with them. There is no time limit. Everyone reacts to emotions differently and that's okay. Being reminded that I am a normal human being who has emotions makes me feel better in how I deal with them. It's okay to feel things and it's okay to express and deal with them differently.

Another important thing I sometimes need to be reminded of is that humans are not perfect. We make mistakes and it's okay. I'm sometimes hard on myself and expect a lot of myself. I often find I put a lot of pressure on myself as well. One of the greatest lessons I've ever learned is to say no and put your well being first. Sometimes, you can't do it all. Sometimes you are too tired and you need a break and that's okay. We are humans and we need rest. We get tired and we can't do everything. We are humans and we are not perfect and that's okay. Realizing I am not perfect and cannot do it all was life changing to me.

I think sometimes it's hard to remember that we are all only humans. We have emotions that we deal with and we are not perfect. It's okay to feel and act differently than others when it comes to emotions. Hearing this advice and coming to terms with it was one of the greatest lessons I have ever learned and has changed my life. I've learned it's okay to deal with my emotions in my own unique way. It's okay to say no and it's okay to not be able to do it. Once I came to terms with all of this, I became less stressed and much happier. I was happier with myself and knew how I am is okay. Reminding yourself that you are only human and being human is okay, I promise it will have a positive impact on your life.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
