Not knowing is okay. Most people think going into college you have to have a clear cut path. You have to know exactly what you want to do and exactly how to get from point A to point B in the most efficient way there is, but that is not always the case. College is a time to figure it out, to learn and grow as a person, and finding what you want to do along the way. Of course, there are the rare few that do have it all figured out, have a plan and stick to it. But for the rest of us, we're really just flying blind, and that's okay.
The sooner you realize that most of the people around you have no idea what they are doing either the better off you're going to be. Everyone walks around pretending they have it all figured out but inside we all have that little voice in our heads screaming, "I have no idea what I'm doing!" If I'm being honest, I've stayed up more nights freaking myself out about what I'm going to do for the rest of my life than I am even willing to admit, and I can almost guarantee that you have too.
It's okay to not know. It's okay to change your major. It's okay to change your major six times! It is completely ridiculous to ask an 18 year old, who had spent their whole life doing just about the same thing almost every day, to pick a career path for the rest of his or her life. We haven't experienced enough in our young lives to make that kind of major decision. And too many times I have seen students so discouraged because they don't love their major, or they feel like they just need to stick with it because they have already wasted so much time on it. If changing your major will make you happy, do it, you can't stick with something that important in your life just because you have already spent too much time on it.
You do not owe anything to anyone. You only owe it to yourself to do what makes you happy. If you are sticking with a major, or a job, just to please your parents or the people around you, you are in for a long torturous career. You cannot base the rest of your life on what is going to make the people around you happy, when they're no longer there what is going to keep you going? You need to do what makes you happy, you're the one who has to live with your choices everyday, not them.
So get out there, travel, take random classes, find what makes you happy and what you're passionate about. You aren't doing yourself or anyone else a favor by choosing to do something with your life that you aren't passionate about. The world needs more passionate people, there is no excuse to settle for something that you can "live with" don't settle for a career that you are going to wake up every day wishing you had taken the time to find what you are passionate about and makes you want to get up every morning and get to work.
The day you start working for yourself is the day you feel like there has been a weight lifted off your chest. Remember that everyone is in the same boat, you are not a failure because you don't know what you want to do. You are actively working towards figuring it out and that is the best anyone can do. Everything will eventually fall into place, until then trust the process and enjoy the ride.
