Its Okay To Admit You Have Strayed Away From Yourself

We seem to lose ourselves more than we find ourselves in college.

Coming into college, you are like a little fish in a huge aquarium. You are still trying to find yourself, your likes and your interests. You also stray away from the person you were before college. You become a totally different person than you were in high school, and I think this is what stuns people the most when they are in their freshman year. One thing I learned my freshman year, is that you lose yourself more than you find yourself.

Faith seems to be a very touchy subject in college, especially in today's times. It is often the major topic that seems to get lost when entering this new chapter of your life. I know for me, it got lost, or covered, in my life due to all the other things I thought were more "important." I know there are many people who feel the same way, and it needs to become a talking point and a comfort in conversations.

Entering my second semester of sophomore year, it hit me. It is time to get back on track and get right with my faith again. How can one go through life without the hand of God? Absolutely no one. Second semester of freshman year and throughout sophomore year, I struggled, I struggled real hard. I did not even know who I was anymore, grades started to slip, and I was constantly surrounded by negative vibes and people. This is a feeling many new college students know too well, and can either change it, or continue down in a spiral. I chose to change it.

"There is no place so desolate that you cannot find God."

How could God still accept me and guide me when I had strayed so far from him? That is the amazing thing about the big Guy upstairs, he will NEVER leave us, no matter how many times we leave him. How amazing is that? That He loves us that much. Getting back into church and ministry on campus has changed my life for the better, and honestly, I do not know how I survived freshman and sophomore year. I am living a more positive life and I have such a better perspective on it.

College is hard. College is weird. It is a weird time in every ones lives. You are on your own for the first time and you have so much freedom that you do not know what to do with it. Put that fear and freedom into getting right in your faith. Cast all of that on God and pray. Nothing, no matter how bad it is or was, could shun you from God's love and presence. I promise your life will be way more positive and you will be surrounded by constant positive energy. Where can we go from the Lord's spirit or presence? Nowhere, his hand follows us and guides us through every step in life we take.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
