We, as millennials, want everything to be perfect. So perfect that we become terrified to fail. So terrified to fail that we don’t reach our full potential. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of young adults our age doing amazing things in the world, but then there is us. The ones that are scared to fail. The ones too scared to try because we do not want our peers to pass judgment on our imperfections. Coming from the Queen of Imperfections, it’s OK to not be perfect.
In today's world we have to have the perfect look, the perfect GPA, and overall, a perfect life. If your cat wing eyeliner isn’t perfectly drawn, forget going out in public. If you can’t take the perfect picture for social media, you might as well not post one at all am I right? Hopefully, you will tell me I am very very wrong because you are more than the makeup on your face and your social media presence. Not only is society obsessed with having the perfect look, we are also told we need to have the perfect GPA. We focus so much on getting the perfect “A” that we start to pick up some unhealthy habits. Stress levels are rising, the amount of sleep we get is decreasing, and our caffeine intake is through the roof and who could only image what it is with other substances. Relax. Breathe. Take a moment to count to ten and realize your worth is far greater than a number on any kind of scale.
If we were all meant to be perfect, we would be robots and not living our lives. So, since we are human and definitely not robots, we get to live our lives the way we choose and make all the mistakes in the world. We learn from the mistakes we make anyways so just consider it an educational lesson. If we were all perfect, the funny Facebook videos we all cry from laughing over would not exist and I refuse to live in a world where I can’t indulge in them.
No one is a true success over night. It just doesn’t happen and if it does it is a fad and it's going to fade away. Taking chances and not succeeding the first time does not make you a failure. You only truly fail when you give up and I hope you all never give up. Never be scared to take a chance just because you might fail. If I did not take a chance and apply for the Odyssey I would not be here writing for you all today.
A part of us all wants to be perfect, and that’s what makes us human. I wanted my debut article for Odyssey to be so perfect that I lost sight of what I really wanted my message to be. As much as it is OK to not be perfect we will still strive for it; it is in our human nature to do so. If I am being honest I still strive for perfection every day. I want to be the perfect size. Have the perfect skin. Be able to contour perfectly and match my outfits accordingly. I want the perfect love life. The perfect job with the perfect salary. I want it all. However, I have never been happier in my life than I am before you all. I have the best of friends. A great job. Academic success (so far). Parents who support me endlessly. I have all of this while not being perfect and I am totally fine with it and I love my life the way it is.
We all want to be told we are perfect and we are. We are perfect in the mistakes we make. We are perfect when we walk out the door and start our days. But we are truly our most perfect selves when we are not being perfect.
