“Hahaha you look like a fob”
“That’s so hipster and cute! Where can I get one?”
Throughout history, the British and Americans have been known as the biggest conquerors. Britain, especially, invaded all but 22 countries in the world. Only 22 countries on this entire planet remained free of Western oppression and influence. They continue to make racist comments and jokes in today’s society, but they use the very things they make fun of at their convenience. After years of slavery, captivation and torture, foreign cultural sentiments have now become music festival accessories.
Q: How do you blow up a Hindu? A: You press the red button on their face.
Insensitive jokes circulate around without a second thought, yet modern Indians face backlash of this mindset in their everyday life. From a young age, Indian children are constantly told they smell, are questioned about the meals their moms pack for lunch and unfortunately, become ashamed of their beautiful culture. All Indian food is categorized as curry, completely diminishing the diversity and complexity of the cuisine. Indian food becomes an exquisite date night outing; otherwise, Indian food smells. When outsiders see extravagant Indian fashion, however, the culture is suddenly fantasized. For example, Iggy Azalea's Bounce music video highlights the beauty of the countries, but it blatantly ignores the hardships and struggles that people surrounding her in the video face.
Indians are stereotyped and ridiculed as technical support, yet people rush to them in times of need. Disrespected, they still work diligently to earn their place in society. Although this applies only to the general population, there is a superiority that we must continue to fight today.
