You used to love the color purple.
Your shadows followed in hues of royalty but made you feel trapped.
The walls were painted to brighten your days, but
Kept you in a cell.
The light shades of purple were your womanhood.
You faced every day with sweat dropping to the ground as your foot pounded the foundation.
As you ran,
Your mind raced.
The shades were darker from the inside.
Purple
When blackberries run they stain your skin.
When you ran your brain seeped out;
You suffocated in a violet cloud
But you ran to get away.
When you painted, you oiled your canvas ROY G BIV.
Most of himself was missing,
But a piece of him still left you in ashes.
You started out with
a soft lilac, perhaps
Just something in the back of your mind.
You carried a flower in the back of your book bag.
Periwinkle was what you crumbled in your hands.
It snowed weights of burdens you couldn't name
But by the end
You were pushing through
You were willing to see blue
and you kissed indigo goodbye.
Your chains of your weary baggage
Sucked the life out of you
Like the dull shade of Mauve.
A beautiful masquerade,
You danced on lines
Like magenta or fuschia,
Pink flourished into purple
Like taunts on a chalkboard.
When you told me
What the weight was that held you,
I realized why your favorite verse was established in your veins.
Psalm 18:2 was etched into your heart:
"The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior;
my God is my rock, in whom I find protection.
He is my shield, the power that saves me,
and my place of safety." 1
But I didn't know;
The Lord knew you better.
As you flourish in Him
Be reminded,
Be encouraged
In the fresh clear waters of the gospel that turned you white.
I wish I could've encouraged you more
In the days it didn't seem like a reality.
But I thank God for His sovereignty for
It wasn't up to me.
But the day I did find out,
I asked why your favorite color turned from purple to blue,
why you liked teal better than your past days.
I found out blue was not the color of your depression,
It was purple.
