Free Kesha from Dr. Luke's Abuse and Manipulation

I stand with Kesha and you should too.

In October of 2014, Kesha revealed that her music producer Dr. Luke began sexually, physically, verbally, and emotionally abusing her for a nearly a decade. Earlier this morning, a judge denied Kesha's request to temporarily halt her contract with Sony Records and free her from working under Dr. Luke.

Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Shirley Kornreich ruled in court that granting Kesha's request of temporary freedom would undermine the New York's laws that govern contracts and that the court cannot do that.

To make a long story short, and to be crystal clear about what this means:

Kesha's request of being able to create and produce her own music while feeling safe and free from her abuser/rapist was denied. She will still have to work under Sony and produce six more albums. In the judge's eyes, Dr. Luke and Sony have invested too much money in Kesha for her to be granted freedom.

But if you'll recall, Zayn Malik was able to leave the contract under Sony's Syco and sign under a different producer. He was unhappy as a member One Direction and was granted the opportunity to create and produce music on his own terms.

To make sure we're on the same page here, let's recap: Kesha is being FORCED to work under a man who raped and abused her. Under a man who belittled her. Under a man who is not being criminally charged, and who instead is being valued because he makes Sony so much money. Who cares about Kesha's happiness? Who cares about her health? Apparently not Sony.

I have seen people argue that because there is no "proof" Dr. Luke raped and mistreated Kesha, that he should not be punished. But the lack of "proof" of the abuse does not mean the abuse did not occur. The lack of proof should not mean that the rest of Kesha's life will be negatively affected.

That is not the face of someone making false allegations. That is the face of someone who is hurting. That is the face of someone who deserves to be free.So why was Zayn was freed from his band obligations, and from his contract, for his unhappiness? While Kesha must remain?

This is more than merely gender discrimination and inequality. This is Sony defending a rapist and abuser, standing up for the wrong party.

We must band together and boycott Sony's money-hungry, abusive company. We must stand with Kesha.

#FreeKesha!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
