Is It Better To Know, Or Not To Know?

Sometimes the unknown can be daunting

Is It Better To Know, Or Not To Know?

What if we could just know everything? It would certainly make things a lot easier if we knew exactly what we would be doing in two years, 10 years or even 20. The fact of life, though, is that most of us don’t even know what we’re doing next week. The unknown can be scary, but sometimes it is better to just not know what is in store because life is more exciting that way.

If everything is etched into stone and spelled out for you, everything will be too easy and when things are too easy, it’s boring. The unknown makes you try harder, learn more and keeps the surprises coming. When you get a job or promotion that you weren’t expecting or win a trip to a destination you really wanted to go to, it feels a lot better than it would have if you had already known that you had it.

Not everything that will happen will be good and it’s not nice when something that is unexpectedly bad happens, but would it be any better if it was expected? Probably not. If you don’t know that it’s coming, though, you don’t dwell on it, which could make it less painful.

Of course it is impossible to predict the future or ever know everything, but it is easy to wish that you could sometimes, especially if you are in a bad place and want to know that everything is going to be okay. If you ever feel this way, remember to take things a day at a time. Find something to do that day that keeps your mind off of everything that is going wrong. If you lose your job, you will find a new one, even if it doesn’t seem like you ever will. If you break up with a significant other or having a falling out with a friend, it was probably for a reason and you will still have other people in your lives that care about you.

When things that are out of your control seem to be taking over your life, focus on the things that you can control and what you do know. Put yourself in the most positive mindset possible and go from there.

If everything was known and everything was easy, everyone would be able to do everything and what’s so special about that? Some of the best things in life are the things that are spontaneous and unknown. Doing things that you didn’t know you were going to do are probably some of the most fun things that you will ever do.

You should embrace the unknown and charge into it at full speed rather than try to avoid it and feel the need to know too much. Sometimes knowing too much can be a bad thing and not knowing can be the best thing for you, as hard as it is to believe sometimes.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
