Is Feminism Necessary?

Feminism: the advocacy of women's rights on the grounds of political, social and economic equality to men, as defined by Google. For centuries, women have been paid lower amounts, have had fewer rights and have been treated as if they are inferior to men. But what about now? Is this issue still prominent in 2016? Do females still actually feel as if they are inferior to the men in their lives? Well, I believe the fair answer is yes, and no.

No one said being a girl was easy. However, it is easier for some than others. Many females in today’s world are strong and independent. It is just in their nature to not feel inferior because they simply do not think of themselves that way. Many females are fortunate enough to be surrounded by individuals, men included, who respect them and treat them as equal humans rather than by what their gender is. But this is not the case for every female. Unfortunately, there are still people in this world who believe in male dominance and power. Both men and women included. So here is where the need for feminism is necessary.

The pressure to find a husband has been more stressed upon than for men to find a wife. Why do women need a husband, but men do not need a wife? To be fair, no one needs to get married. Just putting that out there. It has been seen in the past that men have once believed as if they are superior to women. However, what is even worse is the women who have and still believe in this too. There are many of us out there who do not see it, nor get it. Many of those women who are unfortunately subjected to this mindset eventually start to believe in it themselves. No one should ever have to feel inferior. But, in the world today, we are exposed to this sort of mentality daily.

Unfortunately, feminism is absolutely necessary and needed. The belief that males are superior is still a common one today. Whether it be gender, sexuality, race or class, the world is subjected to inequality. This is unfortunate and hard to change. It took years for people so see races as equal, and even that is still a problem today. With all the effort and work that people put into this world in order to make it a better place, there are still those opponents who want to have it their way. And for this reason, we do need people, like feminists, to help set things straight so that everyone has equal and fair rights.

There are a lot of people who are opposed to this idea of feminism because of what certain feministic groups believe in. There are also a lot of misconceptions about feminists, and I think it is the actual word “feminism” that strikes a nerve for some people. Why does it have to be feminism? Why can’t it just be called “equality?" This idea of gender equality is still necessary. Whether you call it being a feminist (for a fancy term) or the belief in equality, you are wishing for the same thing: that we all are looked at and treated equally as humans rather than by our gender.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
