For my entire life it seems, I have been warned about the all-powerful and fearful freshman 15. Prior to college, it seemed as real as the abominable snowman or the tooth fairy. Like most situations, I thought, even if it is real, it won’t happen to me.

Seven months into the second semester, it happened and I hated myself.

In moments like these, it is best to refrain from the I will stop eating ice cream or the I will get rid of carbs and fats mentality! The list goes on and on. Although their specifics differ, their results remain the same: binge eating. The chances are you won’t last too long with these diets. You’d be like a 17-year-old boy experiencing his “first time,” expecting to last longer than the "Lord of the Rings" movies. It is unrealistic, folks.

What does work: Intuitive eating!

Intuitive/ mindful eating is simply recognizing your hunger and eating during those times exclusively. Acquiring love for yourself and food is also a big result of this philosophy and lifestyle (That was a warning for all those who fear love). Feeling guilt after a meal is such a waste of precious time and emotions! Instead, focus your thoughts on the marriage between your mind and stomach.

With busy schedules, we tend to skip meals ( lowers your metabolism and causes you to overeat later) or rush them. Your nervous system cannot keep up with you and say - Hey, your hunger is satisfied. You’re overeating! - if you’re inhaling your food ( like Patrick). However, when you take your time, you’ll get the signal and save yourself from the excess. It will also allow you to enjoy each ingredient thoughtfully integrated within each bite (YASSS).

Since the purpose of food is to satisfy hunger, we should refrain from abusing it for comfort or in high-stress situations. That’s what stuff like Netflixing, venting and yoga are for!

Before taking each bite, ask yourself am I really hungry or is this a craving? Maybe, you’re just dehydrated! You won't believe how big of a difference it’ll make not only physically, but mentally! At first, I tried this philosophy just to lose weight, neglecting my mental health. That quickly changed, though with mindful eating. It helped me to not only look, but feel better about myself. And it turns out, that is what I needed the most.

So, start loving food again. Banish the guilt, and try intuitive eating!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
