A Letter From The Editor

Introducing myself.

A Letter From The Editor
John Morrison

Dear Readers,

My name is John Morrison, and I am the new editor-in-chief for Odyssey at the University of Wisconsin-Madison! I'm a sophomore at UW majoring in English and political science and a brother of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. I've been writing for Odyssey since the end of my freshman year, and I served as social media director for a time prior to switching to the editorial staff. Like all of us here at the UW Odyssey, I am sad to see my predecessor Sadie Dorf leave, but I am confident that our team can continue the standard of excellence she set.

What does this mean for you, the reader? There will be a few changes, but your experience will remain largely the same--my team and I will continue to work to provide you with the best content from our stellar writing team, in both print and online media. However, we are also going to implement a new initiative to increase our ability to cover breaking news and thus deliver must-read stories more promptly. Look out for more news pieces, pop culture coverage and politics (especially in this election year). This is not to say that our oh-so-hilarious listicles are going away--far from it. However, we're punching up our long-form content as well. Expect to see new types of engagement from our social media team and to see content released more consistently going forward. We are also looking to increase our print circulation, so look out for Odyssey around campus in the coming weeks!

The purpose of Odyssey is for us millennials to produce and share content that reflects our unique perspective on the world. We do our utmost to accomplish this mission each week, but we can't do it without you, readers. Without your feedback on what works, what you like to read and, most importantly, what we can do better, we will be unable to achieve our mission. To that end, I encourage any of you with ideas to improve your Wisconsin Odyssey chapter to contact me, or better yet, apply (see below).

Additionally, we are always looking for talented, driven people to join our team. If you have ideas worth spreading or jokes worth telling, then apply to write for us! Have camera, will travel? Then you're a great fit for our photography staff or perhaps even multimedia coordinator, and you can help us deliver visually beautiful content. Odyssey is one of the fastest-growing platforms in the country, and is only growing more influential. It's an exciting time to be on the staff, and I encourage anyone interested to apply.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
