First, I would love to hear a little about you! How old are you? Have you or are you going to school? What is it you do for work? What are you into, hobby-wise? What makes you, YOU?
I am 18 years old! I graduated from high school at the beginning of summer. I'm currently working as a housekeeper at a hotel, but I sometimes take art commissions on the side. I hope to go to college one day so that I can pursue a career in art. I'm especially interested in becoming someone who writes and/or illustrates children's books. I've just always loved the soft, cute pictures you find in them. As far as hobbies go, I'm really into video games. If someone asks me what I do for fun I say "I game and I draw" those really are my favorite things.
Have you always loved drawing? Is this just a hobby or something more?
I've always been a huge fan of drawing. I remember when I was a kid I'd stay up all night drawing and watching my favorite Pixar or Ghibli movies. I'm not really sure what made me decide to seek out a career in art. I suppose it's because it's always something that I've felt comfortable with. It was something I felt I was capable of. I bounce back and forth about how serious I am about it, but in the end, I always feel like its what I should do.
What about Steven Universe made you want to dedicate your time and talents to your fan work?Steven universe is a beautifully crafted show created by brilliant minds. Everything from the dialogue, the music, the story and the art direction is amazing. On top of all of that, its funny too. It's got enough story and mystery to keep it interesting without becoming foggy and overbearing. I'm not a big fan of watching tv shows, so the fact that its kept my interest for this long is pretty astounding itself. I'm particularly fond of the gems and their character designs. They're all so different! It's wonderful.
Steven Universe fans create a large community, especially online, what is it like being a part of it in the way that you are?
My personal experience with the Steven Universe community has been exceedingly positive. I get dozens of messages from people telling me how much they love my art and how inspiring it is. It's incredible because if it didn't happen, I never would've believed it could. Something I find really amazing is that I'll be doing something casual, say, watching a video on youtube, and I'll scroll to the comments and see someone with my art as their icon. Somebody I don't even know! They loved my art enough to do that! I just sit there and think "wow isn't that neat?" because I wasn't even looking for my art, and there it is. I hope that made sense. I know that there's good and bad in every community, and Steven Universe is definitely no exception, but I'm glad I could be part of the positive side. I'm glad so many people enjoy what I do. I'm grateful for it every day.
