Welcome to the world of internships. This is the time in your life where brewing the office coffee is your sole responsibility. You see, internships are basically that last step before you enter the real world. You get a taste of what it's like to work in a "real" work setting, yet the work never follows you home when you leave.
So you have an internship this summer? If you do that means one thing, your alarm clock goes off way too early. I can relate, after all, I really prefer not to open my eyelids until 10 a.m. But we do what we gotta do.
Once you have risen from your deep slumber, you probably drag yourself on over to the coffee maker. This is where you start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. You know that after that first cup of coffee you will be able to maybe fully open your eyelids, and exchange words with your roommates.
Once the coffee has entered your system, you probably begin to wish that stuff came in an IV. Unfortunately it doesn't, I checked. But you move on to get ready for the day complaining about how you have to pick out a "business casual" outfit. But let's be real we all secretly love dressing up. Or is that just me?
So you're ready for work, and your stomach begins to growl. You don't want to even entertain the thought of pulling out the pots and pans to make a full fledged meal, so naturally you steal one of your roommates granola bars and run to work. Besides at this point, you're already bordering the fine line between "fashionably late" and "you're probably going to get fired if you take any longer."
You arrive to work, and the only person keeping you accountable are your fellow interns. You act casual once you see your boss, and make it look like you've been there for the last half hour, when in reality you are probably sweating up a storm from stress running to work. You walk over to the coffee maker to inhale the weak office coffee, only to find out it is empty. IT'S GAME TIME. This is your one and only important job as an intern so it looks like all eyes are on you. The happiness of the office lies in your hands. But no pressure right?
Also you will manage to spill coffee on yourself at some point, I can promise you this. My advice to you would be to carry a Tide-to-go pen, so you don't look like an unprofessional child walking around an office full of important old people.
As you sit at your desk for the remainder of your time, you can't help but love your job, or tell yourself that you do. You and the other interns form a bond over just how much you love your jobs and the free office coffee. At the end of the day you leave work with a smile on your face knowing that you are on the right career path.
Be happy you are just an intern. You have the opportunity to leave your work at the office, and be stress-free when you go home, which is rare once you enter the real workforce. So thank your boss next time you see them, because they are giving you an awesome opportunity. Not only are you thankful, but so is your LinkedIn profile. The more endorsements the merrier right? So next time you complain about brewing the coffee for the 10th time, just know there's a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
