Us millennials are growing up in a society where we want the best of everything. With endless choices nowadays of constant social media advances and even the most ridiculous snack flavors, I have realized that our generation is being formulated into quite a competitive group of individuals.
Likes and followers on social media have played a huge role with this competitive mentality. I feel like there is this unestablished standard of how many likes you need for your photo to be considered legit on Instagram now, what even is it? Like 50, 100, 1,000 likes?!
I have laughed with my friends about Instagram pictures not receiving a ton of likes right away and we agreed that if this is the case, we try again later.
“Just delete it and post it later… seriously, more people will be out of class by that time.”
The idea of being “Instagram famous” has brought some controversy of how ridiculous of a term it is, yet people seem to still be striving for more followers and likes.
Whether Instagram famous is a real thing or not, even actual celebrities take this social media competition rather seriously. Taylor Swift recently posted a picture thanking her friends for her 50 million followers…yes, 50 million!!!

Snack foods have also come up with some of the most ridiculous flavors. There’s seriously a whole aisle dedicated to a cookie flavor now, and Oreos are one of them. They have made some of the most unimaginable flavors, is it to keep people interested?
Berry, fruit punch, cookie dough, marshmallow crispy, limeade, banana split, watermelon, red velvet, s’mores, lemon, birthday cake, cotton candy, pumpkin spice, DOES IT END? Maybe their strategy is to constantly be the “best of the best” so that people (like us millennials) want to keep buying their product? Idk.
But honestly, can we just stick to a regular Oreo cookie with a glass of milk please??
Even Lays chips have taken part in this ridiculous flavor idea. I don’t know how people would even want to try some of these snack flavors. There’s something about a meat flavored snack food that kind of freaks me out.
Alright think about it, we are surrounded in a society where being “cool” is having the most Instagram likes, and instead of a delicious tasting cookie representing a company, a company needs to have the most un-heard of options to attract the most consumers! I think these standards surrounding us are making us more and more competitive by the second.
Let’s take it down a notch; maybe let’s worry more about the actual quality of an Instagram picture before we worry about its popularity and originality; and how about we actually enjoy a snack food before trying every flavor ever thought of?
