Many few people realize how much reading has inspired me to write. When I tell you that I love to read, it means just that. I love to read. Not just any kind of reading though. I am not a huge fan of nonfictional works. I am in love with the fiction side of reading which ended up with me loving both reading and writing. Within each of these authors, I found myself inspired to love reading and how to write as a novelist.
William Shakespeare
Like every other person in the United States, we are taught about William Shakespeare and his famous play Romeo and Juliet. William Shakespeare was the first writer ever to make me fall in love with writing. It wasn't exactly Romeo and Juliet that inspired me, it was his play Hamlet that inspired me to write. Not only did the name Ophelia sound gorgeous, her death announcement was viewed as one of the most poetic scenes in literature. To me, that scene was beautiful. I realized then that I wanted to write and inspire other people to write as well, like Shakespeare inspired me.
Jane Austen
My grandaunt from Canada actually introduced me to her novel Emma. The way Jane Austen wrote instantly hooked me to read more novels by her. My all-time favorite novel (ever) is Pride and Prejudice. It was where I fell in love with the romance Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy had. A romance that budded not by love at first. It was where I fell in love with the Old English text. With Jane Austen, she inspired me to write Old English pieces as creative writing exercises and, maybe one day, write a novel just like Pride and Prejudice.
Philippa Gregory
Another relative from Canada introduced to her novel The Queen's Fool. Ever since I was little, I always wanted to be a princess in some kind of fairytale. The Queen's Fool wasn't about being a princess but it does include Tudor England Royals and high class nobles. From there, I began to love historical fiction. While reading more novels by Philippa Gregory, I used what I've read to expand my knowledge on what I knew about the actual royals and wrote creative writing pieces. I was inspired by her to write historical fiction.
Josephine Angelini
Every week or so, Amazon has a book sale where some novels are free or $0.99. The novel that caught my eye was Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini (It's a trilogy and one that I highly recommend you to read). It definitely was about two people forbidden to love but it was also set on Greek Mythology. I have always loved Greek Mythology ever since I first watched Disney's Hercules on television. Josephine Angelini inspired me to write about the Greek fantasy of gods and goddesses (with their demigod children).
Richelle Mead
The public library near my house was always my safe haven. As I was browsing through the fiction section, I ran across a novel about vampires. Vampire Academy made me fall in love with vampire fiction even more than I already did. Richelle Mead inspired me to write a vampire novel I am currently writing at this moment. It's on Wattpad (Username: @WonderfulGenerations) called My Beloved. She opened up my eyes to view vampires as not scary vicious creatures but as beings that were fated a certain way and want to be loved as well.
