Inspiration For The Black Woman
Grant Thomas

1. Your every breath is ammunition and your every word is a shotgun bullet.

It’s no wonder why you’re hushed, why society wants you to shut up and deems you angry when you don’t. They simply cannot comprehend your firepower. Speak up and use it.

2. When he says you are pretty for a black girl, he is trying to tell you in the sweetest way possible that for the sake of having your full lips and curves, he is willing to pardon the Africa running through your veins.

He does not want all of you, so don’t give him any of you. You don’t need him.

3. It’s okay if you can’t dance.

4. No matter what anyone says, you are not ‘talking white.’

There is no monopoly on speaking with proper English.

5. Don’t trade in your kinky hair for the sake of normality.

Dare to be unfamiliar, no matter how many combs you break. I assure you, you will turn just as many heads.

6. Do not feel discouraged if your fellow black man does not recognize the magnificence before him, it is not your fault no matter what venomous self-hating words fly from his mouth.

Do not let them pierce your self-esteem, don’t let him make you feel inferior for the amount of times the Sun decided to kiss your skin.

7. I’m pretty sure the Moon, just like him, is jealous of the light in your smile.

8. Don’t worry if your body doesn’t exactly remind others of Serena Williams, Beyoncé or Erykah Badu.

Your soul is what truly matters, and the melanin in your skin makes you just as ‘Black’ as anyone else.

9 . Don’t ever underestimate the power you have.

It is your touch that turns regular black men into kings. You build us; without your steady honeyed voice we have no foundation and even though we don’t always want to admit it, we need you.

10. You are beautiful. Never forget that.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
