Important Insights On Trump Being President
Jelani Splawn

Friday was the dawn of a new day in which Donald J. Trump swore in as president of the United States of America. Despite the controversies and what most individuals consider, a stressful election, Trump managed to achieve a secure spot as president. To many, this is a great victory, hopeful that he will achieve many accomplishments in a matter of four years. For others, it is a problem, due to his unconventional nature and questionable statements. One thing people can all agree on is that this election has been a battle in which, only one individual would come out on top and to “trump” the rest. However, just like the beginning of his campaign, there was some opposition. Many groups decided to protest against the inauguration, many notable members of congress refused to join the event, and everyday people just didn’t want to watch it. Needless to say, there are some people who aren’t found of our president-to-be.

“That’s so stupid. This is our country and our president. Why people can’t accept that?”

It is all about a matter of perspective. Remember the time when Trump talked about building a wall? Or the time that he called illegal immigrants rapists? How about that time he proposed to ban Muslims from entering this country and to surveillance Muslim-Americans while they attended mosques? It also didn’t help his case when a video of him leaked out when he talked about grabbing women by the genitals. There are a lot of statements he made in which many could not approve. As president, one must represent the country in a certain way. For us Americans, we expect our leader to be fair and just. Not perfect, but not to the point where they talk about grabbing genitals without consent. There is opposition against Trump, because many believe he represents everything wrong with the state of the country. A place with extreme xenophobia, ignorance, and controversial motives.

“Well if they don’t like this country, then why don’t those people just leave?”

Here is the thing. Many people still believe in the American Dream, an idea in which the country would be a place of wonderful opportunity, equality, and healthy living. This idea is what Americans of the past worked hard if not died for (solders, slaves, protesters, etc.). American isn’t without its flaws, and it is up to us to make sure we talk about these issues and flaws so progress can be made. It isn’t that people do not like this country, but that there are things in this country, many people cannot approve. Would you approve of someone calling your Muslim friend a “terrorist”? Could you stand by as your black friend gets racially profiled, despite their innocence? Should you just ignore the fact healthcare and education isn’t a priority? As I said before, perspective is everything. To many, Donald Trump is a sign of change. However, for others, it is troubling. No one knows the outcome of this election at all.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
