As I get older, I realize how important family truly is. When you grow up, go off to college and leave your parents behind, it's an adjustment. As I near my end of my college career, I'm starting to realize how important it is to spend time with your parents. As we get older, so do our parents. Growing up, I was always very close with my parents. We would spend weekend dinners together, vacations together and watch our favorite television shows together.
Now that I'm on my way into the "real world," I have not only realized that I should spend more quality time with them but that they can teach me important life qualities. Growing up we all go through those stages of not wanting to associate with our parents. For me, I always enjoyed spending time with my parents. They've always been a fun and entertaining couple. As I grow and mature into a young woman, I have realized that my parents truly are my best friends.
It's amazing once you get older how much admiration you have for your parents. I can truly say I have learned so much, from personal things to important life advice, by spending a weekend or two with my parents. It's true what they say about listening to your elders:
"Listen to your elders' advice. Not because they are always right, but because they have more experience of being wrong." —Unknown
Having your parents around to guide you through life is important. Not everyone has the opportunity to have a relationship with their parents on a deep level. Yes, you may not want to listen to your parent's advice all the time, but 95 percent of the time they're always right. They've had more experience than us to know how to get through this thing called life.
By spending more and more time with my parents, I have grown to realize how having them around makes a huge difference. They're not always going to be around to tell us how much laundry detergent to use, to warn us from drinking two-day expired milk or remind us to make that doctor's appointment. (Even though you know your mom will make your appointment if you beg and plead.)
College is hard, and when you have a support system which includes your parents, it makes a world of difference. They have gone through college themselves, adjusting into the unknown "real world" and experiencing life in an adult job.
Sit down with your parents. Laugh, smile and have a heart to heart with them. I can promise you that you won't regret it. You'll look back on this in the future and thank yourself for spending that weekend or even just that night with your parents. As you get older you will appreciate the little things a lot more.
"I love my parents. No matter what we go through, no matter how many times I've wanted to move away, no matter how many times I got mad at them for protecting me and telling me the right decision. I will always love them because in the end they will always be there for me." —Unknown
