So a couple of weeks ago, I came across a trailer for a new Netflix series and people seemed pretty mad about it. After watching it, I certainly didn't blame them. I, like many people, am pretty sick of the "fat people can't be fulfilled or happy" trope that everyone is sick of but Hollywood seems to cling to so desperately.

I thought, however, that the series would be just that. Another fat-shaming, unfunny teen "comedy" that was poorly written, not at all funny, and a sad cliche at best. Don't get me wrong, it is that, but it's also so much worse than the trailer makes it out to be.

I thought I'd save everyone some time and watch this thing myself, write about it, and kill people's curiosity at the source, so this thing doesn't get any more undeserved views. For that reason, a few days ago I started this series and I'm writing this now having just finished it. Let's get into it, friends.

So, for starters, we've got a motif of pedophilia. It's meant to be some kind of running joke. This character who falsely accused another character of being a child molester is actually, herself, engaging in statutory rape with his son. Dark, right?

Well, according to "Insatiable" this is the classic comedy. Lol, teen boys being targeted by a pedophile who also used the t-slur out of nowhere for no purpose other than a sad attempt at shock comedy. The insult is quickly deferred by another character telling her not to be "homophobic" because "Insatiable" apparently believes that being gay and being transgender is exactly the same thing, given they are both included in the LGBTQIA acronym.

Clearly, the concept of gender and sexuality and the difference between them is too complicated for a show thats plot is "Debby Ryan used to be fat but then isn't but is MEAN AND PRETTY NOW!!!" but that doesn't stop them from trying (and failing) to make it a part of their show.

They have a scene involving a trans actress that seems to essentially imply that being transgender and dysphoric and cisgender and dysmorphic are equivalent. I have body dysmorphic disorder, and I'm pretty sure I don't know what it's like to be transgender, so that's a big yikes. That's not where it ends, though, folks.

We're also treated to a running joke wherein Debby Ryan's character is oblivious to her best friend, Nonnie's, crush on her, because "HAHAHA Lesbians!! It's funny!! Cuz she's Gay!!!" Nonnie's arc is that she struggles with her sexuality for like ten minutes and then meets a girl in the bathroom who becomes her girlfriend and then comes out super quickly after that. Like, literally in the same episode she comes out to most of the important people in her life and it's never really directly addressed again.

Finally, a shockingly biphobic plotline about the pageant coach, Bob, (the accused molester, who was accused by an actual pedophile) and his boyfriend (also named Bob) who begin their relationship closeted. However, Gay Bob, much like Nonnie, comes out in like ten minutes, but not before he and Bi Bob (pageant coach) make some very biphobic remarks. Then, Bi Bob is outed by Debby Ryan's character, Patty, because she's mad that her mom left for some reason and because Nonnie's girlfriend finally convinced Nonnie that Patty is a bad person.

He and his wife and his son have marriage problems for about an episode, but then he decides he's polyamorous. This is because he's in love with his wife but also they've both cheated on each other and the most recent time, he cheated on her with Gay Bob. However, "Insatiable" wouldn't be "Insatiable" without asserting that all bisexual people are unfaithful unless they're poly. As a bi person who has never cheated on a partner and is not polyamorous, needless to say, I was S H O C K E D.

When Bob cannot be poly with the people he wanted to be poly with, he attempts suicide, gets interrupted by Patty, who has now turned 18, and IS DATING BI BOB'S SON KIND OF, and he decides they are fated to be together and helps her hide a corpse. Pedophilia rears its ugly head once again.

I know what you're probably thinking. "Wow, this is pretty bad, but at least it isn't racist." Think again.

The pedophile who used to sleep with Bi Bob's son has a daughter adopted from China. This is repeatedly joked about. Just that she's Asian and her mom isn't. Like, that's the whole joke.

At one point she and the only other Asian teen on the show briefly date. He points out that this is a cliche to which she responds that she is not Asian because she's adopted. I think that about sums that up.

We're not even close to done yet, because let's talk about how stigmatizing this show is about mental health. The aforementioned villain of the show has one other running gag, besides being Asian. A whole two character traits: this writing goes deep for Dixie. She is also mentally ill and has been diagnosed several times.

This is merely written into the script to be used as a punchline against her. The only other two mentally ill people in the show are both literal murderers. Like, they both kill or attempt to kill people. That's it.

Patty is encouraged to starve herself and overexert her body exercising in an attempt to lose ten pounds in a week. Something that is literally an eating disorder. This is juxtaposed with her binge eating disorder, and they're both presented as jokes.

"Lol! Fat girls eat too much!" "Lol! She's not fat but she binged and now she has to starve herself so she won't be fat again! HA!"

Let's not forget that this show is also anti-semitic. There is a character in one scene, named Father Schwartz, who is a Jew for Jesus, shows up for about two minutes to be a caricatured stereotype and call Debby Ryan "bubbela" and then leave.

Overall, this show is a sick, gross, terrible attempt at comedy. It's disgusting and deplorable. I hope it's taken down soon and never produced anywhere again, but until that happens, don't waste your time watching it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
