No one really thinks about what will happen when they get seriously sick at school. Handling an illness while far away from the care of parents and family doctors is usually the last thing on a student’s mind. Trust me, when I started feeling very sick earlier this week, I had no idea what to do and I quickly learned that constant phone calls to my parents can only do so much. Instead of learning the hard way, here are some tips on how to find the appropriate medical care for your illness while in State College!
The most convenient: UHS
Situated on campus, UHS is the most convenient option when you need to see someone fast. The staff is very professional and the pharmacy, located inside is definitely a plus, ensuring an easy trip to solve your sickness woes. Also, everything can get charged to your Bursar account, which is extremely convenient. However, be aware that appointments can be very limited, so if this is a true medical emergency, you may want to forego the health center and move on to other options. Word to the wise, if you call and talk to a university nurse on the phone, there’s a good chance you can magically book an appointment that is not available online!
Although I have had both positive and negative experiences there, you cannot beat the convenience. Definitely consider UHS when you’re experiencing small illnesses. If it’s anything more serious, it may not be the right destination for you.
A little more serious: Medexpress
Located off of North Atherton, Medexpress is definitely the choice when you are not feeling well and want to see someone right away. Although you may experience a bit of a wait, Medexpress may be more capable of handling your illness than UHS. However, you must be ready to pay a copay upon arrival and find the means to get there, both of which lessen the health service’s convenience.
An emergency: Mt. Nittany
You need to be seen and you need to be seen NOW. Do not hesitate to make the short trek to Mt. Nittany Medical Center when you seriously do not feel well. Although I was picked up and whisked away to a hospital in Pittsburgh earlier this week, if my parents were not available I definitely would have ended up there. It can be extremely intimidating going to a hospital alone, so definitely bring a friend! The staff is friendly and understands how difficult it can be to seek treatment when you are sick, especially if this is your first time dealing with an illness without the support of your family.
