Individual Vs. Uniqueness: There is a Difference

121

Dr. Seuss was right about many things, especially the part about being “you.” Today, society has a misconstrued belief that being your true self and being unique are the same things. Prejudice exists in all forms, and we need an obligation to destroy the mold of prejudice. Within our society, being yourself and being unique do not share the same meaning, but they should. To be yourself means that in all aspects of your life you make decisions based off of what you desire and strive for. By Calley Ellison However, little idiosyncrasies like style, music, taste and food only fill a small amount of a person’s personality. Yet these small idiosyncrasies create a large portion of a person’s image. What you wear, what music you listen to, what type of health regime you all influence which category that people unconsciously place you. The “individual” is unique and different than the rest of society, but not necessarily themselves. What I mean is that striving for uniqueness is not “you.” Although, as people we strive to fit in, we also try to stand out. The terms “hipster,” “frat daddy,” or even just “sorority girl” place a title over our heads that we are condemned for. Every person has placed other people into a category of some sort. Yet we never stop to ask, “Are you truly the brand or are you just trying to fit in?” In high school, people placed me under the category of hipster because I wore clothes from Urban Outfitters listened to bands like Foxy Shazam and Marcy’s Playground. Then, when I joined a sorority I was placed under the category of “Sorority girl,” and people assumed they knew what I was like. All they saw was what I was wearing, where I was from, my major and therefore, had their mind set that I was a “conformist.” In this case, the connotation of the word “conformist” is not kind. In fact, placing pretentious words like that over someone’s head leads people to believe they are not different or unique and that they fit the mold of every other person in the organization. This is not a feeling I would wish upon anybody. Besides prejudice, there is a bigger concern- the concept of someone not being true to himself or herself. The fact that someone cannot be themselves around their “friends” or that they cannot say what is on their mind due to the fear of stepping out of line, is truly horrific. The moment someone stops caring about what others think about them is the moment a person’s uniqueness stands out. It is our obligation as people to not judge and to say “good-riddance” to the harsh categories that others place upon our heads. Reformation only takes one person to make a difference. However, it takes an army to make a permanent change for the better. It all starts with a simple “I will not judge you.”

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
