Although being a girl in college is hard, not every girl has the money, nor the time to do half of the things listed in this article. Most of us are actually focusing more on our grades than what guys think about us. As college women, we need to learn how to empower each other, rather than making one another feel as if we are slacking on ALL aspects of life.
1. “She always has a fresh mani and pedi.”
Let’s be real here, most of us go months without getting our nails taken care of. I am lucky to not have bitten off that ‘fresh’ coat of paint in the class that I sit in, but have no idea what’s going on. Guys do not notice when our nails do look nice because they do not care.
2. “She makes sure her hair color, cut, and style is on trend.”
After talking to many groups of college women, it’s safe to say spending $100 on hair every four to six weeks is ridiculous. That easily adds up to be $1,200 a year. On hair. A year. For a guy who does not care if you have split ends or not. What? How?
3. “Her makeup is always on fleek.”
This is a hard pass for me. Although I do enjoy wearing makeup, as a college girl, I do not think a guy in college needs to compliment my lashes or new foundation when he sees me, or even notice. Also, I don’t see the reason to wear a full face of makeup every single day. I think as women, we should empower one another to be comfortable in our own, natural skin.
4. “She’s always up in the gym workin’ on her fitness.”
This. I laughed. After doing some research, 15% of college women go to the gym every day. While exercising and eating healthy is important at our age, it just almost does not happen. Clean eating is much more expensive than buying frozen meals or lunch meat to live off of. Not to mention a gym membership costs a pretty penny.
5. “She always has the most stylish outfits and rarely wears them out twice.”
Even though some girls live by this “rule,” I know a great number who would vouch for wearing Nike shorts and a t-shirt every day if they could. If you don’t want to wear the same outfit out twice, go to a friend’s closet instead of wasting money on an outfit you’re “only going to wear once.” Again, spending hundreds on an outfit that Alex from Phi Apple Pie is not going to notice is outrageous. And look! Even Kate Middleton wears the same outfit twice!
6. “Her teeth are white, eyebrows are threaded, and her skin is clear.”
This is actually the most accurate thing written in the article. We do care about our skin, eyebrows, and teeth. However most of us do not do this for the boys, we do it for ourselves.
7. “Not only is she flawless, but so are her surroundings.”
Our rooms are not always clean, our cars are rarely clean, and our beds are almost never made. While balancing school, sororities, academic clubs, and everything else that comes with being a college student, the last thing on our list is to make sure our cars are clean. Don’t let us fool you, if our cars are clean, it probably means our trunks are packed full.
8. “She’s got beauty AND brains.”
While most of us do stress about our GPA, it is mostly because we are focused on getting into our dream graduate school, or getting that dream job we have been waiting on for years. Again, as college women, we should focus on ourselves rather than what Alex thinks about us. Our degree will get us places, not the frat daddy that wears the same t-shirt with the stain on it from last night.
9. “She grinds hard at work.”
College girls around the United States work while going to class full time, participating in sorority events, and trying to have a personal life. Most of these girls do not expect to be reprimanded for this, but also does not care about the guy’s opinion she has been trying to impress. Because honestly, guys in college could care less about a woman’s work ethic.
10. “Her Insta game is strong AF.”
Most college girls' Instagram is filled with pictures from football games, cute pictures with random dogs, sorority functions, and nights out on the town. Not documenting that ‘fresh’ mani-pedi or that $100 outfit you will only wear once. While us girls care about our appearance, it shouldn’t be our top priority as a college girl. If your Instagram “stresses you out to an unhealthy level,” something is wrong there. Your whole college experiencing should be finding out who you are as a person, a student, and a friend.
Here is to the girls who do not have the time or money to be spending on impressing a boy. #YouGoGirl
