In today’s society, education is focused on one thing: S.T.E.M.
S.T.E.M started great opportunities for under privileged youth. Due to S.T.EM, schools are getting “make overs” to implement the best technology in their class rooms. However, with all the emphasis on S.T.E.M, today’s college students are feeling the pressure. More often than not students debate their course of education and career. They fight to go against their skills and passions, instead studying for what their parents and societies want them to. The peer pressure is not only from students, it's from their families and media too.
The misconception comes when students decide, “I can’t major in _______ because it’s not S.T.E.M. I won’t make money so what’s the use.” That’s a lie. What most people fail to remember is yes, S.T.E.M careers do pay a lot of money and they are in high demand BUT without Liberal Arts majors, how will this technology be successful? Let me explain.
Lee Byung-chul developed Samsung electronics, but without the help of a designer, an advertiser, a sociologist and many others it wouldn’t be successful. To sell, the product needs to be user friendly and welcoming. This is where the artist and designers come into play. Once they add the apps, the nice display options and easy to navigate settings it’s people ready. But how do they know what the people like? The sociologist and anthropologist come together with a little research and let them know. How do you think Apple came up with the Apple Watch? The researchers saw that the tech population liked the Samsung Galaxy Gear, so they reinvented it in an Apple version with all the things people liked but with an Apple twist. This is how the tech field is constantly able to evolve and stay in business. The tech population gives there feedback on everything, the good and bad. Then the next invention is better.
After sales, the next step is marketing and advertising. It starts with graphics, making ads, posters and flyers. Then it gets down to communication and people skills. Further known as, retail. As you can see the success of one product can require the contribution of over seven different departments. So yes, S.T.E.M is a major field that gets heavily paid, but it’s not the only key to success. Success is achieved through hard team work of all skills and education. No one person is key.
