I love watching puppets have sex.
This isn’t always true, but in the case of the one sex scene in the recently released movie "Anomalisa," it sure was. The story, all told in stop motion puppetry, revolves around Michael Stone who is bored out of his mind. His job is to teach people how to do the most boring job other than being a rich mom who watches her newly painted walls dry to make sure her underpaid painters painted the walls the exact correct shade of brown because it has it match the brown couches she bought. He teaches people how to be a telemarketer. His life sucks, and it feels really familiar.
What feels even more familiar is the climax of the movie, when Michael sleeps with Lisa, a woman who he met in the hotel. The two average-looking people meet and flirt through an awkward interaction, they walk back together because their rooms are close by, and they both clearly want to hook up, but also both equally intimated to initiate. Sounds familiar, Skidmore?
Finally, Michael cracks and asks Lisa back to his room. She pretends to be hesitant, but that’s the game we play. What follows is a sex scene that is so awkward and forced that it is by far the most true to life sex scene that I’ve ever seen on a screen. (OK, get your porn joke out of the way.) The sex, acted by puppets, was less sexy than an accidental dick pic from your grandfather. But for some reason, I never even blinked.
Coming from someone who is objectively fantastic in bed, maybe I’m not the best person to make this assertion, but sex, and all related shit tends to be not so satisfying in the end. And it’s frustrating that we need a movie acted by puppets to teach us that’s OK.
