Mark your calendars for February 27, 2016, the 20th anniversary of Pokémon. (Well, technically in the U.S., the games came out in 1998, but in Japan, they came out in 1996.) Anyway, not only is it the anniversary, but Nintendo decided to celebrate with a bang, and starting on February 27, the original Pokémon Gameboy games will be available for download in the 3DS eShop.
That’s right, all three games, Pokémon Blue, Pokémon Red, and Pokémon Yellow will be available to buy, with each game costing only $9.99.
The hunt for the original games in various used video game stores is finally over. Well, unless you are a collector of the old games like me. Let me tell you the original games can sometimes be very hard to find, and with Nintendo making them readily available to buy in the eShop, so many people can now relive the good old days of catching them all.
Another great thing about the games coming to the 3DS eShop is that trading will be done wirelessly. Remember those link cables? Nintendo has cleverly taken care of the issue of trading on the 3DS system with trading wirelessly, whether you have Pokémon Blue, Pokémon Red, or Pokémon Yellow. Not only can you trade wirelessly with the original games, but you can also battle wirelessly as well.
Although it will be on the 3DS, the graphics will remain the way they were originally and will not be altered to allow for 3D graphics. Keep in mind that these are the original games down to the core, the awesome music will still be there and the gameplay and graphics will all be the same. The games are not being remade, they have just been made available to download from the eShop.
Also, for those who got into the Pokémon craze late and have been playing the later generation games that have over 700 different Pokémon, these games will remain true to only having the original 150 Pokémon. Along with the release of the original games into the eShop, Nintendo is also celebrating the 20th anniversary by releasing a new Nintendo 3DS Pokémon 20th Anniversary Edition bundle pack. The bundle pack is priced at $199.99 and will include Pokémon Blue and Pokémon Red preinstalled, 2 Pokémon cover plates featuring Charizard and Blastoise, and a download code for an exclusive Pokémon HOME menu theme. This bundle pack will also be released on the anniversary, February 27.
Along with all this great Pokémon news, keep in mind that you still have Pokémon GO to look forward to. During the Super Bowl this year, a Pokémon 20th anniversary commercial aired with Pokémon GO being featured. While Pokémon GO is still a mysterious app for iOS and Android devices with no set release date, it is still another anniversary gift to look forward to along with the original games. Remember, February 27, 2016 the day you went back in time.
